Happy People at a Doctoral Writing Retreat 📝🤩 From November 13–15, our PhD students Pauline Baudens and Dominik Beckers attended a doctoral writing retreat in southern part of Estonia, in Pühajärve. The inspiring event brought together social sciences PhD students from across Estonia. The dedicated workspace provided a focused environment, and the shared motivation among participants made staying on task much easier 🤓 Beyond the academic productivity, the retreat offered a serene atmosphere with beautiful lake views and relaxing amenities (hello, pool, jacuzzi, and sauna!), creating a perfect balance between work and leisure. One of the highlights was working together with fellow PhDs, particularly those in social sciences working on digital topics. The connections made during the retreat hold great potential for future collaborations between researchers at different universities. By the way, we at FinEst Centre are very open to collaboration! Reflecting on the experience, Pauline shared how the retreat was a valuable reminder that community and collaboration are essential drivers of academic progress. #PhDlife #SocialSciences #AcademicCommunity #AcademicWriting #DoctoralThesis

An important topic 👇 this week I declined co-authorship for a paper that I had nothing to do with: I didn't write it, I didn't do the analysis. I was offered co-authorship for different reasons, but I politely declined. Don't get me wrong, I read the paper after declining it and I liked it. But: As an author, I have responsibility for what is being published, and that I can only take if I really am the author or one of the authors. Looking forward to the kickoff & keynote!

2025 Summer Institute for the Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe Calenda - Zones and regions 2024-07-23 https://buff.ly/46na9hc The Summer Institute for the Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe (SISECSE) is a two-week residential workshop, that provides scholars of Eastern Europe time and space to dedicate to their own research and writing in a collaborative and interdisciplinary setting. In addition to conducting their own research, scholars will also have the opportunity to participate in a series of immersive discussions on a broad topic of shared academic interest. In 2025, discussions will explore “Epistemic Mistrust: Authorship, Credibility, and Knowledge Production.” Whether in times of crisis and war, or times of peace and stability, who do we trust to tell the truth? Whose stories do we listen to? With a growing lack of trust in traditional sources of knowledge—including suspicion of academic institutions—public confidence in the value of research is eroding. Nevertheless, humanistic approaches are essential for fostering critical thinking and promoting interdisciplinary dialogue.

🧑🔬 Many research grants are extremely competitive. Depending on the grant, often only 1/10 applicants get accepted. 🚨 But for many researchers, no grants = no research. 🚫 That's why I was extremely happy for Krzysztof, one of our Published Researcher members. 🎓 He recently got funding from EU's Jean Monnet research fund. 💰 If you also want to get more grants, we can help. 🙋 📍 Do what Krzysztof did a month ago: Book a free 1:1 consultation.
