It was great to be interviewed for The Parliament by Matthew Lynes on the Destination Earth project. We covered how the European Commission is pursuing digital twin technology as a tool aiming to simulate potential climate outcomes and trajectories. It’s doing so via the Destination Earth project, which also gets access to EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU)’s High-Performance Computers, including the LUMI supercomputer located in Kajaani, Finland. Remote sensing and other imaging technologies are opening up a world of data to support more accurate measurements of climate change-related activity. From monitoring #emissions at the source to observing changes in Earth’s systems like receding sea ice or global tree cover, these technologies enable us not just to look and analyze, but to act. We’re glad to be one of many new tools available for open use that provides individuals and organizations with better data to make informed decisions. “Rather than building emission inventories based on ground-up, self-reported estimates, Climate TRACE is taking a top-down approach — by building a global inventory of GHG emissions based on direct, independent observation, by using satellite imagery, AI, and machine learning.” How these tools are used is up to you. https://lnkd.in/gTYhRxRD

Microsoft's AI atmospheric model, Aurora, showcases the fusion of traditional HPC with AI techniques to achieve remarkable speedups. Unlike traditional HPC models that require solving equations across the entire problem space with no shortcuts, Aurora stands out by being the first large-scale foundation model of the Earth’s atmosphere that can handle vast amounts of atmospheric data. What sets Aurora apart is its training on over a million hours of diverse weather and climate simulations. This innovative approach allows for substantial advancements in predictions. To delve deeper into how Aurora redefines atmospheric modeling, check out the article below: https://lnkd.in/gNYj9yxt #HPC #AI #scientificcomputing #weatherforecasting

Embracing AI to Combat Climate Change In light of the pressing climate crisis, experts have been exploring the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to aid society. With rising temperatures, floods, and heat waves threatening billions of lives, the urgency of finding solutions is clear. A recent 2023 report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Google highlights a promising prospect: AI could potentially reduce 5-10% of pollution contributing to climate change by 2030. This is like having a computer detective sorting through data to uncover insights crucial for addressing climate issues. Satellites and AI offer hope for global action, says UN weather agency AI and machine learning are already revolutionizing the science of weather forecasting by it “faster, cheaper and more accessible”, she noted, before adding that cutting-edge satellite technologies and virtual reality simulations are now “opening new frontiers” in key sectors already threatened by climate change and hazardous weather, such as land and water management. Highlighting the value of satellite technology to climate science, Ms. Saulo explained that innovations in space-based Earth observations have helped to improve monitoring of greenhouse gas sources and carbon sinks. The WMO Secretary-General also noted the potential of new technologies such as “digital twin” – which creates a virtual replica of a physical object, such as Earth - and virtual reality – which offers immersive simulated environments – to help achieve universally agreed Sustainable Development Goals and enhance disaster preparedness. #UN #AI #MachineLearning #WeatherForecast This content is jointly prepared by ripple2wave and ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd. 🤔🤖🧠 Curious about the role of #artificialintelligence in #climate science? 🌩️🌿 AI and machine learning are set to play increasingly important roles in climate science and modelling. These powerful tools can analyse complex data but they are not error-proof and their results need human validation. Take a closer look in this post from Christopher Irrgang, Niklas Boers, Maike Sonnewald, Jan Saynisch-Wagner published in Carbon Brief ⤵ https://lnkd.in/deRKP7Xs

Microsoft recently unveiled "Aurora," a new AI foundation model designed for high-resolution weather forecasting. Aimed at addressing the challenges of climate extremes, Aurora leverages over a million hours of diverse weather data and can, the company claimed, "reliably analyze and forecast climate events even in scenarios or geographies where weather data is scarce." I am suddenly obsessing about AI x Climate and wanted to put together interesting pieces as I make some observations along the way. More articles to come! Many of you told me that my articles are long and they would like a shorter 'give-it-to-me-straight' versions of those. Infinite explanatory voice notes later, I have added a not-so-formal version on Substack too. The race for Artificial Super Intelligence and the climate emergency are 2 sides of the same coin - they are not mutually exclusive, quite the opposite. Their fates may well be intertwined... The theory.... By taking a decentralised approach, sending AI clusters to where the heat they generate can be used for social and industrial good, is the only logical way to win both the technical race to ASI, and the climate emergency race to electrify home and industrial heating. There isn't enough power or grid capacity to think otherwise but it is a big conceptual leap. Read Part 1 of the theory here https://lnkd.in/dqtG9txd and part 2 here https://lnkd.in/d8e4W6YN The practicality... Now for the fun bit.... Come to our event on the 21st August and see how Nokia and Deep Green are making this a reality. Turns out Nokia have been working on problem for even longer than we have. Come and hear from Clayton Wagar, one of Nokia's lead data scientists, about how we're solving the problem of getting physically distributed AI clusters to act as a single super computer.... Like our first event this is a TED style talk which we're filming so slots are limited https://lnkd.in/dWBp3vCt And.... for context on Deep Green and the (really) big picture. Have a watch of this https://lnkd.in/eksqeSPA.....
