Today, on World Environment Day, we acknowledge businesses and destinations committed to a journey of constant sustainability improvement.   The past 12 months have seen a significant industry evolution in the role played by destinations and cities to support progress. This has taken the form of destinations providing additional guidance, sharing good practice, enhancing prominence at conferences, and at times support for businesses to work with certification programmes such as Green Tourism or Green Meetings.   In the past year, Visit Belfast and Belfast City Council made a major contribution to advancing the sustainability discussion in the industry by offering to share their full experience and associated lessons in the white paper ‘Sustainable tourism for cities and stakeholders, and the Belfast model for success’, created in partnership with Green Tourism and Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS-Movement).   It’s my sense that this collaborative approach has contributed to the positive sharing culture facilitated by the Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS-Movement) in recent years.   In 2024, other leading regions and destinations have built on the lessons learned from Belfast’s programme – allowing an informed approach to be adopted when tailoring interventions carefully to local circumstances.   The next 12 months promises not only to see hundreds more businesses engaged in their own sustainability journey in leading destinations, but will undoubtedly unearth new successes and lessons to inform and inspire industry progress. Hostelworld Group Joins Forces with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) to Create a New Sustainability Framework for the Hostel Industry. The ‘Staircase to Sustainability’ framework, built in line with the GSTC Criteria, aims to provide hostels with a clear pathway to communicate their sustainability management practices, as well as acknowledge their socio-economic, cultural, and environmental impact. Caroline Sherry, CFO and ESG Lead at Hostelworld Group said: “While there is a sustainability framework for hotels, our hostel partners have voiced that the existing frameworks do not adequately address the unique characteristics of the independent hostel market. This is why over the past 18 months we’ve dedicated our time, working in close partnership with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, to craft this pioneering framework for the hostelling sector. But the bay isn’t alone. Across the Phi Phi islands, rapid tourism and climate change have left fragile ecosystems struggling to keep up. 🔥 As coral reefs bleach and marine life dwindles, the region’s natural beauty—the thing that draws millions—has become its biggest challenge. The Thai government’s move to close Maya Bay from 2018 to 2022 and again from August to September 2024 was a significant attempt to let the ecosystem heal. 🌱 From marine life returning to coral reefs slowly rebounding, Maya Bay’s closures have begun to make a difference. Hospitality can have a big impact on local communities and the environment. On the positive side, hotels create jobs and draw in tourists who spend money at local shops, restaurants, and attractions, helping the local economy. But there are downsides too. Belize is proud to be hosting the 1st Annual World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards at the Cahal Pech Archaeological Site on September 27, 2024. The Belize Tourism Board invites all eligible stakeholders and businesses to enter for a chance to be victorious in one of 21 categories pertaining to sustainability. All categories can be found below, however, there are three categories that are open to Belize Only. Those three categories are: 1.
