Have you checked out our 2023 Impact Report yet? In 2023, the Capital in the Community Fund distributed nearly $2 Million in capital, with 100% of that funding going to Black, Brown, and female founders. The map below reveals a bit more about those companies, showcasing that almost all of the businesses we funded are located in the Bay Area, with 55% of them being in ESO's founding location, Oakland. To close Black History Month, we’re honored to share three CO.created short films on the Dearfield Fund For Black Wealth. The first is episode 1 in “the creation of home” series, featuring the Johnson Family. After helping 178 families with down-payment assistance, the Dearfield Fund has sharpened its strategy to better serve Black women, who made up 60% of the fund’s borrowers as of late 2023. The Dearfiled Fund acknowledges the incredible potential in Black women like Nicole Johnson, who represent the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S. What’s more, by raising $20 million in investments, the Dearfiled Fund believes it can pass along $50-$75 million in generational wealth for Black families like Nicole’s in Denver’s Black communities. Some weekend reading (actually watching/ listening). An extremely thought provoking presentation from Denise Hearn hosted by The Long Now Foundation about how the economic stories that we tell about what profit is are both relatively new but profoundly impactful on society (and skylines) in not very helpful ways. For my historic connections still involved in equity research and investor engagement, but also very much for my newer connections working in the intersection of climate, community and finance. And anyone thinking about how modern neoliberal capitalism must be adapted or replaced as a matter of existential necessity. https://lnkd.in/eFUsnHD7

We came across this resource today and appreciate Coralus and Criterion Institute for presenting this thoughtful reflection on sharing power. Thrive Impact Fund was founded and led by non-profit leaders. After decades of leading organizations and working to raise resources, we got exhausted by the deep power imbalance within the sector between funders and non-profits, and the lack of access to capital. Thrive Impact Fund is working to remove barriers to capital, and yet we are learning so much about how the financial system itself is designed to consolidate resources and power. All to say, it takes time to learn a new system before we can work to change it-- we are learning and learning fast. Resources like this offer great grounding and examples on sharing power.
