🎉Arizona is the 12th state to publish Generative AI Guidance🎉 I was honored to attend the launch event yesterday and hear from the members of the core team of writers. Knowing some of them already and having met some of them during the process of reviewing the document, I was confident they would produce guidance that Arizona would be proud of. From my perspective as a teacher, here is what I most appreciate: ✔️A tie back to Arizona Academic Standards not just for Computer Science and Ed Tech, but including core content areas as well. ✔️AI Integration with both teacher and student use cases. ✔️AI Literacy Goals, also tied back to AZ Standards. ✔️A balanced perspective with opportunities as well as risks. ✔️Implementation Recommendations which include my favorite quote, so aligned with exactly what I have been trying to do: “Encourage early adopters to share their experiences and insights with peers to foster a collaborative learning culture within the district and scale best practices.” Luke Allpress said yesterday that everyone would probably rush home and highlight, mark up, and read this document cover to cover. I think he might have been kidding…but that’s exactly what I did 🤓 I had a little head start as a reviewer, but I couldn’t wait to dive in and see the final draft. And here’s the thing: it’s SO readable. You don’t have to be a tech person to be understand it, and you don’t have to be a crazy AI person like me to find it interesting and instructive. If you’re an educator or an educational leader, it is a must read, and it’s a green light to move forward with thoughtful implementation. It is a TRUE guide, and it is SO good. Thank you, Arizona Institute for Education and the Economy, Northern Arizona University and all who were involved in the creation. Ya'll know I don't post regularly but when I find something I think is amazing I'll make an appearance. I was reading an article that stated only 18% of K-12 teachers were using GenAI in their teaching. That number saddens me knowing how it could help time-strapped teachers better engage with their students. I can only assume that part of the reason it's not being used more is an unfamiliarity with the topic. Google partnered with MIT RAISE to create this FREE resource called "Generative AI for Educators".
