Been reading In the Plex, the story of how Google started and while chapter 1 is a very heavy start, there are some seriously impressive and hilarious parts that highlight just how impressive the engineers actually are and some of the most confounding problems most of us would never have considered, let alone be able to solve. “Google’s synonym system came to understand that a dog was similar to a puppy and that boiling water was hot. But its engineers also discovered that the search engine considered that a hot dog was the same as a boiling puppy.” “This was the hard-won view from inside the Google search engine: a rock is a rock.
