Where Climate meets Deep Tech The HackSummit is heading to Newlab, New York this December 13-14th. And to make the most of the New York ecosystem, this edition will have two key overarching thematics; Climate Deep Tech and Climate Finance. We’ll focus on the solutions that have a direct impact on reducing gigaton scale emissions Through new and novel approaches to manufacturing food, materials and chemicals, creating more energy efficient cities, capturing and reducing emissions at their source. And everything in-between. This isn’t about hardware against software, it’s how and where both can be applied to create the most amount of tangible impact. Ready to join the debate on what's new and next in Climate DeepTech? Head this way 👉 https://lnkd.in/eyyzbYVM

In the age of rapid technological development, society finds itself grappling with its relationship with technology. Ted Kaczynski arises as an unlikely icon for those dissenting against the perceived dangers of modernity. In this article, Paige Christianne Andres explores the #Unabomber’s influence on online discourse about modernity and technological developments, how his anti-technological sentiment translates in the age of climate crisis and information overload, and how that increasingly shared sentiment leads to online communities mythologising the #UncleTed figure.

MIT launched Fast Forward: MIT’s Climate Action Plan for the Decade plan in 2021 to respond to the challenges presented by the global climate crisis—an update of MIT’s first Institute-wide plan in 2015. Fast Forward took a quintessentially MIT approach to the need for urgent action, centering science, research, and collaboration as key tools to mitigate and reduce our impact. We’re calling these efforts our Campus Climate Action, and we’re excited to share stories of how our researchers and the teams responsible for our physical plant and facilities are working together to make our campus more sustainable. Our first feature in the series showcases the collaborative team working to reduce MIT's energy use and emissions through the use of AI algorithms. https://lnkd.in/eT5JCzZE

“Progress proceeds at the speed of trust.” Quick reflections from the UK’s biggest climate tech event: Innovationzero-AR 😃 The good: lots of brilliant people coming together at scale with energy and optimism to work on the massive challenge… bumped into lots of old connections and friends. Favourite session: Greg Jackson from Octopus Energy has done more for climate in this country than just about anyone. Cheaper, cleaner, better service … the solutions are obvious for those brave enough to build them. 😠The bad: big corporates boldly talking about leading the green transition whilst continuing to pollute (but at least they know this is the future) 💡 The ‘what could be better’: • add a climate ai hackathon • gamify the panel format • get some live startup pitching happening • amazing science demo’s to enthrall • live fact check corporates climate comms and broadcast on a big dashboard. The Financial Times (# NotTreeHugging) has created primers on new climate technologies. (aka, One more sign that tackling climate change through business solutions has gone mainstream.) The Financial Times, one of the most trusted global news organizations, especially in financial journalism, has written primers on the following climate tech topics. - Low-emission steel plants - Grid-scale battery storage - Methane inhibitors (for cattle) - Direct air capture - Sustainable aviation fuels - Carbon capture and storage - Heat pumps And these overviews are not all “psychedelic rainbows and high unicorns.” Most contain a healthy dose of reality. 👍 -- Get more climate tech intel in my free EFI (Entrepreneurs for Impact) newsletter - https://lnkd.in/dpyN8VjB
