I was so happy to interview with Andy Yen of Proton to get the scoop on why, on this the 10th Anniversary of Proton, they are transitioning to a non-profit structure. • The Proton Foundation is now the primary shareholder of Proton, protecting the company’s independence into the future. • 1% of Proton’s annual revenue is also being pledged to the Foundation, further committing Proton’s financial success to the public good. • Exactly 10 years ago on June 17th, 2014, Proton launched a public crowdfunding campaign which saw over 10,000 individuals donate over 500,000 CHF ($550,000 USD) to support its development. • In the 10 years since, Proton has grown rapidly, surpassing 100 million user accounts, employing over 500 people and developing an ecosystem of additional products including Proton Calendar, VPN, Drive and Pass. • Uniquely, Proton does not have any venture capital investors today and has achieved its growth largely organically. • As per Andy Yen: "Privacy is not just a feature; it's a fundamental right... By enshrining our mission in a foundation, backed by Switzerland's robust regulatory framework, we're not just protecting our own future; we're making a statement about the future of the internet itself." Thank you Will Moore and Andy Yen for allowing me to tell your story! Read more here!
