In my last life update, I put a little teaser about something new I am working on. Today, I am finally able to share. I’m building a new community in #Japan called Musubi Tech (むすびテック). It’s launching in #Tokyo on 7/2 (save the date!), but I have ambitions to expand to other tech hubs like #Osaka and #Fukuoka in the future. “Oh gosh! Not another community!” Yes, many of them exist, including some outstanding ones in the startup ecosystem. Yet, #musubitech is exploring a problem space that most people would run away from: the cross-pollination of the International & Japanese tech communities, particularly at mid-size enterprises. I believe there’s a lot we can learn from Japanese businesses from kaizen to kodawari. Conversely, the methods and innovation mindset of the West have created wildly successful businesses, especially in software. Musubi Tech’s mission is to foster #multiculturalism and #innovation for international and Japanese tech professionals in Japan. The vision is to cultivate a generation of multicultural, innovative tech leaders who can solve Japan’s problems of today and tomorrow by exchanging ideas, knowledge, and connections. I’ve only been in Japan for a little over a year, and I’ll be the first to admit that my Japanese language ability is still nascent, and I have more to learn about Japanese culture. That said, leadership, empathy, and inclusivity are part of my DNA. I won’t brag about past successes in community building and entrepreneurship, but I will say that my past work in both areas brings me much joy! I love Japan, and this is my calling. But I can’t do it alone. I need a village. People who believe in the mission. Hungry people who are curious about the dynamic of intertwined cultures.
