Quantum.Tech Day 2 focused on end users' strategic approaches to #quantumcomputing #usecases. Leigh Lapworth from Rolls-Royce discussed their long-term goal for jet engine optimization using quantum to break the curse of dimensionality in linear algebra problems. Jordi M. explored quantum technologies relevant now and in the future for Nestlé - his team worked with quantum vendors on in-house QKD and is strategizing the PQC quantum-safe transition. In the long term, they're exploring quantum optimization since 1% efficiency improvement means over a billion dollars in revenue. Claudia Perry from bp shared insights on quantum applications in #oilandgas. These talks were refreshingly down-to-earth. End users don't sustain quantum hype. They have specific problems to solve, and quantum might help, but if not, so be it. Quantum won't be used everywhere or by everyone. Some end users bet on potential game-changers like drug discovery and battery design, while others aim to squeeze value from optimization. Also the variety of #sectors represented was impressive - later on we learnt from #finance, #energy, #aviation and #telecommunications. Tahmid Quddus Islam of Citi Global Insights covered the current quantum landscape, governments' role in innovation, preparation strategies, and market opportunities. Dr. Corey O'Meara from E.ON presented on quantum computing for sustainable energy transition, detailing E.ON's investigations and promising areas. Mark Bentall from Airbus discussed quantum's potential for aviation decarbonization. A panel with Leigh Lapworth (Rolls-Royce), Maximilian Walz (T-Systems International), Chloé X. Ai, PhD (Vodafone), and Sebastian Hassinger (Amazon Web Services (AWS)), moderated by Christopher Bishop, explored quantum-AI relationships, team scaling, realistic achievements, and navigating hype and cynicism. The big corporations jumping into quantum is a solid sign, but let's not get ahead of ourselves - these organizations play the long game.
