🍏 Mobile wallet providers and developers will be interested to hear that the European Commission has accepted Apple’s commitments to:
✅ Provide access to NFC functionality on the iPhone to third parties for free. Access will be provided in Host Card Emulation mode, which other mobile wallets already use in the Android environment;
✅ Provide access to the iPhone's Double-Click functionality and ID verification technology such as Face ID, Touch ID and passcode;
✅ Allow iPhone users to select their default mobile wallet; and
❌ Not prevent developers from combining NFC payments with other use cases, e.g., transit cards, access control, concert tickets, digital identity credentials.
This investigation is an example of how EU competition enforcement can, and will, overlap with the Digital Markets Act. The DMA already requires gatekeepers to, among other things, ensure effective interoperability with hardware and software features that they use within their ecosystems.
Apple has until 25 July 2024 to implement the commitments, which will remain in place for ten years.
