We did it! My team and I won 1st place at the Tech for Humanity Hackathon hosted by the British Council!🎉 After three intense days of brainstorming, research and creating a video presentation, we tackled one of today’s biggest challenges: Climate Displacement. Every year, over 7.7 million people are displaced by climate crises, a number that could exceed 1.2 billion by 2050. The economic cost is staggering—over $100 billion annually—and the human toll is even greater, as the world risks a new refugee crisis on an unprecedented scale. Our solution? By leveraging AI and synthetic biology, we proposed identifying areas at the highest risk of ecological collapse and engineering resilient plants to regreen and climate-proof ecosystems. This would protect vulnerable communities and prevent displacement at its source. As the climate crisis worsens, the role of Artificial Intelligence (#AI) in navigating and mitigating its impacts, particularly on developing countries, becomes increasingly important. 🌍 The “AI for Climate Summit” was held on November 4 at the Istanbul Modern Museum. The summit was organized in collaboration with the Turkish Informatics Foundation’s Be Node initiative and the Vector Institute, founded by #GeoffreyHinton, recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics. In this powerful gathering, AI experts and climate advocates explored AI’s role in advancing impactful #climatesolutions. From redefining AI frameworks to addressing the environmental footprint of AI itself, the summit emphasized an urgent need for regenerative and sustainable approaches. Here are a few key takeaways from Ray Boyle, who did an amazing job facilitating the workshop between AI researchers and our partner climate NGOs. 1️⃣ The need for shifting from outdated frameworks to "horizon thinking" for climate action. 2️⃣ AI's dual role: "#GreenbyAI" and "#GreeninAI". 3️⃣ Transforming flawed systems for planetary health and well-being. AI should support this systemic regeneration, not just optimize for efficiency and profit. 4️⃣ Embracing collaboration and innovative governance for regenerative change. The next steps for the Global AI Alliance for Climate Action will focus on working on actionable projects in #BiodiversityPreservation, #EnergyEfficiency, #ExtremeWeatherResponse, and #UrbanPlanning. I want to express my gratitude to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for granting me a new award to utilize #machinelearning in analyzing the impact of new #energy investments on socially vulnerable people in New York and Louisiana. Many current models assessing the effects of climate change and new investments lack the necessary information to address issues affecting socially vulnerable people and to understand the interactions between climate and socio-economic factors. It is crucial to consider these aspects in order to promote a fair and just energy transition and to account for the historical challenges faced by socially vulnerable populations. #AI and #machinelearning can be valuable in this effort, especially when used in conjunction with new datasets that address specific needs and issues (check out, for example, https://lnkd.in/esct-crw or https://lnkd.in/e3ADwT7f). When employed transparently, #AI tools can help us comprehend the processes underlying the data and, importantly, how the influencing factors have changed over time and space, thus enabling us to evaluate the efficacy of investments and the impact of past hazards. I am excited to embark on this new research and welcome anyone interested in this topic to reach out. I strongly believe that we should employ the best methods to address challenging issues like climate justice, and that only a collaborative effort can bring about real change.
