Our Women in Wealth events are where we gather industry professionals to discuss better ways to serve women clients in a commitment to support not only women wealth holders, but the industry serving them. After a fantastic talk at our Women in Wealth event in October, we asked Alexander Joshi, Head of Behavioural Finance at Barclays Private Bank for his reflections from a behavioural finance perspective on better engaging with and supporting female clients on their investment journeys. 💸 'Behavioural finance illustrates how an investor’s biases and behaviours can affect investment decision-making in a way which can impact investment returns. One such bias is overconfidence, where a person's subjective confidence in their judgments is reliably greater than the objective accuracy of those judgments. Overconfidence has been shown to lead to overtrading, which has been shown to reduce the returns of investors. In a seminal behavioural paper on overconfidence and overtrading, men were found to trade 45% more than women, and trading reduced their net returns by 0.94% compared to women. Men have been shown to display a higher degree of overconfidence, across all tasks but especially in those seen as more masculine, such as investing. Investing is also a domain where feedback is low so there is more self-attribution bias - attributing successes to personal skills and failures to factors beyond one’s control - which has an exacerbating effect. Therefore, women investors have the foundations to be very successful investors. As we are well aware, one of the most significant impediments to our clients maximising their investment outcomes is managing their own psychology. Getting invested and staying the course, and overcoming behavioural biases and emotional concerns are fundamental to investment success. With the possibility of a lower baseline level of overconfidence, and a more goal-orientated approach to investing (both from the view of their own family, as well as wider society and environment), women investors may have a more natural instinct to view investing from the long-term lens which is so important to success.' 👉 When women invest, great things happen. This is why The Beam Network was created to educate and help women with wealth empower themselves to become the impact investors we need. If you're an industry professional looking to get insights, network and work towards better serving women clients sign up to join us, sign up to join us at our next Women in Wealth event👇 https://lnkd.in/g6tyKPFe
