🤔 Nice press release, but not a word about the lax copyright rules in 'machine learning paradise' Japan! Note that Japanese law gives basically unrestricted access to any copyrighted material when training AI models. So no matter how you feel about copyright law, there's more to it than just 'growing our operations internationally'. From a game theory POV, this might mean that USA and Europe are forced to relax their copyright laws, too. Or maybe everyone just opens a subsidiary in Japan... Copyright evasion will be like tax evasion: a rich-get-richer scheme specifically for training artificial intelligence.

Apple dropped a very nice Open Source and Open Weight model on the world today. You know who hasn't dropped an open source model in quite a long time now? OpenAI. Since GPT2 actually. I am starting to find that a bit odd. Why have they not released a single one of their models open source since GPT2? Why have they not released any products with any actual differentiation? Why do they continue to go smaller and cheaper rather than bigger and more expensive? Listen to Altman interviews, that is their moat territory. Yet, they are releasing Llama-3 level products and charging for it.
