A lot to be thankful for at Eastern University! Grateful to be a part of this unique, innovative and growing institution. Some highlights: - Enrollment has doubled in the last 4 years, primarily due to high quality, low-cost online graduate programs (MS Data Science, MBA, etc.) but also the highest trad undergrad levels in years - 47% of traditional undergrads are students of color - Our Organzational Leadership online PhD program is ranked #5 by Forbes (now if I can just get that dissertation done...) - Inspiring colleagues and leadership that are building confidence for the future In a world of growing division, I'm encouraged that Eastern continues to grow in its unique role as an inclusive, Christ-centered learning community based on faith, reason and justice that welcomes everyone, regardless of religious, racial-ethnic, sexual orientation, or other distinctions that are often used to divide. Still a lot of work to do, but it's an encouraging direction considering how our broader culture and other academic communities are retreating from unity, diversity, and inclusion. Galatians 3:28. On a new episode of Future U, Len Cassuto, author of "The New PhD: How to Build a Better Graduate Education," delved into the complexities of graduate education and the inherent resistance to change within academia. Cassuto's insights challenge us to reconsider our perceptions of the academic job market and the purpose of graduate education. The reality that the golden era of guaranteed academic positions post-PhD was an exception rather than a rule is crucial for current and future graduate students, as well as academic institutions, to grasp. As we navigate the current landscape, the need for adaptability and openness to new models of graduate education and career paths beyond academia becomes increasingly clear. Cassuto's call to action is not just a reflection on past trends but a push towards a more dynamic and realistic approach to academic careers. This episode is made with support from Ascendium's Education Philanthropy and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. #HigherEd #HigherEducation

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution." Albert Einstein From the time we are young, we are posed with the question of what we want to be when we grow up. We respond to this question based on examples of the professionals in our environments or that are repetively observed in the content that we engage in at that time of our lives. As we get older, we tend to base our answers on our values as they are the foundation of our passion and purpose. I believe what leads us closer to that answer is our experiences with time. At that, our actual career paths could change but are usually interconnected and make a full-circle. I would reference the students that I connected with as our future leaders but that would be a discredit to them. They're already leading us, today. As for me, they are the primary reason that I am in the field of Higher Education. It's events such as Challenge Tomorrow that we had the honor of hosting at our campus that are foundational for our youth. It's through these interactions and experiences that they learn there are unlimited oppurtunities that they could pursue at anytime of their lives. It allows them to hone in on the ones that they feel called to and possibly even re-imagine or imagine new roles that could positively impact the world around them. After all, that's how we create change. Most importantly, they're reminded that they are not alone and have a support system. No matter where one finds themselves, each of our contributions are equally as valuable as any other. Thank you for taking the time to join me in my late night reflections.
Challenge Tomorrow event such a success today at Northern New Mexico College! Over 200 students from our regional middle/high schools engaged with Los Alamos National Laboratory STEM trailers & hiring managers. They also had the opportunity to learn more about the variety of academic programs & student support services that we offer at NNMC. Thank you to my amazing team: Ashley Duemmler, M.Ed., Martin Shupla , Farjahan Rahman Shawon, PhD, Alan Kapulski, Khiana Seaboy, BAIS , TJ Hilton, & Tara Downing for making the day so successful. Also thank you to Rebecca Estrada, Ed.D. & our President Hector Balderas, for your tireless work on advocating for our students in the Valley & providing support & opportunities for our students! #GoEagles
