The European Commission launched its new Climate City Capital Hub last month, supporting cities participating in the EU Mission on Climate Neutral and Smart Cities with crucial #funding. It’s encouraging to see government bodies across the world recognising the importance of #smartcities. However, it is important that these initiatives are underpinned by #standards, to deliver the #interoperability needed for the Internet of Things to create seamless, valuable experiences for end users. Through AI visualization, our researcher, Niklas Mensing, presented the summary of the conference breakout session, "Carbon colonialism: A new scramble for land in the name of the climate?" To save itself from becoming yet another tool of exploitation of people in the Global South, the Voluntary Carbon Market needs to include locals in project design and account for their circumstances, create real co-benefit sharing beyond mere monetary compensation, and operate within the broader framework of decarbonization. #CarbonMarkets #Sustainability #SmallholderEmpowerment #FairLAND24

It's the end of a great first day at #sxsw2024 ! In a serendipitous turn of events, both the #AI and #Climate tracks were underway today; it's been a pleasure to sit in on sessions from both tracks, here are my highlights: 🌐 Climate Futures: A Simulation of Global Climate Scenarios: Showcasing En-Roads (https://lnkd.in/d6YKj4_a) and the possibilities that good data and thoughtful modeling might be able to bring about when looking to solve the climate crisis and plan a collective future. Ellie Johnston did a phenomenal job leading the session with Benjamin Wolkon 🤖 Navigating the Future of Industries with AI: A star-studded all-women panel shaking up the status quo of how to run a panel (loved it) where they focused on answering tough questions and and asking some in return: What is the best use of AI? Are we asking the right questions? Are we ok with AI being used as a shortcut in a way that skips the important steps of failure and learning? The conversation was refreshingly human-centric and balanced practicalities of our current-state with opportunities for dreaming big. Thank you Haibo E Kate Janssen, CFA Yuelin Li Claire Woodcock for sharing your wisdom and projections! 🤝 Breaking the Cycle: Building Climate-Resilient Communities: An inspiring conversation that included the President of the Navajo Nation, Dr Buu Nygren, Ann Lee of CORE Neil Brockway of the American Red Cross and Brianna Sacks from the Washington Post. The discussion highlighted the shift from cyclical response to continuous response as a result of climate change, the need for survivor-driven assistance provision and many questions around the role and future of media in disaster reporting and how it affects these communities. For those who are still around tomorrow I encourage you to join our conversation at 11:30am CT exploring how #data can support #transit planners and communities prioritize locations for transit infrastructure improvements: https://lnkd.in/esqb8QxN

Climate Week is here and it is going to be great! If you haven't already, register below to join us this Thursday for a super interesting conversation on how to balance the growth of AI with the natural resources needed for this growth. Our esteemed panelists represent some of the biggest companies in the space, and I am excited to be moderating what will certainly be a thought-provoking discussion. Come join us! #wearewsp
While AI drives innovation towards a more sustainable future, it also increases our demand for energy, water and other natural resources. Join us during Climate Week NYC for a dynamic panel session moderated by WSP's Sofia Berger, where experts Joyce Dickerson, John Frey, Dion Harris and Lucas Joppa will tackle this critical paradox. Discover how increasing demands for data and storage and data center infrastructure present both challenges and opportunities for addressing climate and sustainability efforts. We'll also dig into emerging trends in data center growth and evolution, and business sustainability goals. Register today: https://lnkd.in/d72vcgFB The session will be followed by a reception and networking event where you can connect with fellow attendees and discuss these important topics further. #ClimateWeekNYC #Sustainability #Environment #AI

It was great to be interviewed for The Parliament by Matthew Lynes on the Destination Earth project. We covered how the European Commission is pursuing digital twin technology as a tool aiming to simulate potential climate outcomes and trajectories. It’s doing so via the Destination Earth project, which also gets access to EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU)’s High-Performance Computers, including the LUMI supercomputer located in Kajaani, Finland. For more on this topic, here is the article: https://lnkd.in/e5WpCkmy #climatepolicy #climateadaptation #digitaltwin #EUpolicy #AI

💭 Ever wondered if our obsessive quest for accuracy and absolute knowledge will lead us astray? 🔬 This question kept crossing my mind as I was researching the latest climate technology for work. Today I want to talk about Digital Twin in particular. Digital Twins are virtual replicas of the Real world, containing real time data of cities (and by extension the entire Earth). They could help policy makers and stakeholders make informed decisions in face of accelerating climate change and crises of all sorts. Destination Earth/DestinE (as it is named by the European Commission) is a key instrument in driving the Digital Transition as part of the EU Green Deal. Sounds eerily similar to one of my favourite tales by Jorge Luis Borges - "On Exactitude in Science". In Borges' tale, cartographers create a map so detailed it matches the empire's size, rendering it impractical and useless. The map is in the end buried in dust and forgotten. As fascinated as I am about Digital Twin's potential in becoming a free platform for sharing data across disciplines and sectors, I wonder what it says about human being's reliance on abstract models to try to grasp the inherent unpredictability and complexity of the (eco)systems they aim to represent? Wouldn't the most informative, detailed and interactive model of the city be the city itself? Anyways, a reminder to go outside and touch some grass (∼:

NYC Climate Chief: AI Must Address Real Urban Challenges to Fight Climate Change NYC’s climate chief emphasizes that while AI has the potential to aid cities in combating climate change, its success depends on addressing real urban challenges. The article explores practical applications of AI in energy efficiency, traffic and waste management, and outlines the challenges such as data privacy, infrastructure needs, and public trust. It also highlights NYC’s commitment to integrating AI into smart climate initiatives like smart grids, predictive maintenance, and green transportation. The key takeaway is that AI can be a powerful ally in climate action when it's focused on solving genuine problems faced by cities.
