My Google search history will never be the same but the fun I had writing this paper made it all worth it 💪 In the age of rapid technological development, society finds itself grappling with its relationship with technology. In all of this, Ted Kaczyski arises as an unlikely icon for those dissenting against the perceived dangers of modernity. Check out the article to see the Unabomber's role as a champion of anti-technology ideals in online communities, especially in the age of climate crisis. #digitalmedia #memes #onlinecommunities #climatecrisis #technologicaldeterminism #manifesto

In the age of rapid technological development, society finds itself grappling with its relationship with technology. Ted Kaczynski arises as an unlikely icon for those dissenting against the perceived dangers of modernity. In this article, Paige Christianne Andres explores the #Unabomber’s influence on online discourse about modernity and technological developments, how his anti-technological sentiment translates in the age of climate crisis and information overload, and how that increasingly shared sentiment leads to online communities mythologising the #UncleTed figure.

Kenneth Evans writes that, with increasing public focus on global #competitiveness, the climate crisis and artificial intelligence, Trump’s and Harris’ records on #STEM policy could provide a hint about how they’d approach these topics if elected this fall. #publicpolicy
Trump and Harris are sharply divided on science, but share common ground on US technology policy

Rethinking the Global Superorganism The global economy has evolved into a dynamic, responsive framework that shapes technology, the environment, and society. It's time to federalize data across borders and sectors to unlock a deeper understanding of this planetary-scale "superorganism." Grounded in ecosystemic thinking, speculative design can uncover innovative pathways to overcome data silos. By envisioning alternative scenarios, we can discover new governance models, data-sharing protocols, and emergent technologies like synthetic data to enhance transparency and equity. Ultimately, this approach can help us cultivate planetary intelligence - guiding the evolution of the global superorganism towards a more sustainable, resilient future for all. Who's ready to rethink the economy and data's role in shaping our shared reality? https://lnkd.in/dyWaCvTr #dataFederalization #planetaryIntelligence #speculativeDesign #sustainability #futureofdata

While the global economy has become a planetary-scale "superorganism," our data remains siloed and fragmented. Without federated insights, we're flying blind into the post-stable climate era, unable to comprehend the true state of our interconnected ecosystems. The 1.5°C target is slipping away, yet we lack the integrated data and systemic understanding to chart an effective course. #dataFederalization #climateResilience #ecosystemCollapse #speculativeDesign #planetaryIntelligence

Where Climate meets Deep Tech The HackSummit is heading to Newlab, New York this December 13-14th. And to make the most of the New York ecosystem, this edition will have two key overarching thematics; Climate Deep Tech and Climate Finance. We’ll focus on the solutions that have a direct impact on reducing gigaton scale emissions Through new and novel approaches to manufacturing food, materials and chemicals, creating more energy efficient cities, capturing and reducing emissions at their source. And everything in-between. This isn’t about hardware against software, it’s how and where both can be applied to create the most amount of tangible impact. Ready to join the debate on what's new and next in Climate DeepTech? Head this way 👉 https://lnkd.in/eyyzbYVM

Organizations focused on achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 will not succeed unless they are supplied with the critical data needed to measure and monitor progress. Fortunately, pioneering climate and data scientist and our client @Angel Hsu is leading a global effort to collect such data. Explore her profile below to learn more about her innovative work.
With the unusual weather patterns experienced across the world, organizations are looking for answers as to how their business will be impacted. One of today’s top worldwide experts on climate policy, our client Angel Hsu, PhD, offers organizations an opportunity to discover and utilize her first-of-their-kind data-based tools and indexes for measuring and tracking progress on the road to net zero carbon emissions. 🤖 A pioneering climate and data scientist and excellent speaker focused on increasing transparency and transforming environmental decision-making and policy, Angel recently launched Chatnetzero.ai, which leverages large language models to demystify the decarbonization goals of companies and governments. 🌐 A University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill public policy professor and a member of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, she’s also an expert on how tensions between the U.S. and China impact the world’s environmental stability. 🌳As part of the Climate Solutions Catalyst (CSC) (https://lnkd.in/etfXJHe9) at Undaunted: Tackling climate change with innovation we are aiming to discover climate solutions from scientific literature. Our hypothesis is that these climate innovations exist but need to be unearthed. 🎉 That's why we are happy to present our preprint "Towards unearthing neglected climate innovations from scientific literature using Large Language Models" in the Latinx in AI (LXAI) workshop at NeurIPS 2024. In this paper, we've: 📃Collected ~100k relevant papers from OpenAlex ❔Designed 7 climate/market related questions to ask human evaluators and LLMs about these papers. 🚀Automated a process for the LLM to read 1000s of abstracts. 🔍Discovered some exciting (and possibly neglected) solutions and fields. This is definitely not our final solution, but a step towards a more complex workflow that'll allow entrepreneurs, investors and scientists to connect, discover and push forward new climate innovations. Paper: https://lnkd.in/edp7JPA6 Thanks to the amazing work of the CSC team: Christopher Waite Nicole Alhadeff and Larissa Kunstel-Tabet. And our co-authors: Diyona Dsouza Cathal Hughes and Alyssa Gilbert Please reach out if you have any comments/suggestions!

For the past few months, over at The Engine Room we have been working on a research project aimed at contributing to stronger information ecosystems in Latin America and the Caribbean. Olivia and I shared some of what we've been thinking about in this new article for Branch Magazine 🌳 As we make our way through the project, one key message stands out: although tech is definitely an important part of how we create better information ecosystems, it’s not the whole story. In the link below, we share some brilliant initiatives who are working to ensure people have information they need, to create conversations about climate and environmental justice with their communities, and to expose environmental and climate injustices. Gathering these examples is our way of inviting readers to look beyond solutions that are exclusively focused on tech and instead explore how we can be doing more to support the work of those who are strengthening information ecosystems like they are: messy, complex, human. https://lnkd.in/e7vBuZqt
