I just love Bari Weiss' #THEFREEPRESS. If you do not read The Free Press you are missing what great news reporting and objective opinion was all about until about 20 years ago. A bit of background. Weiss worked editorial at #THENEWYORKTIMES and quit the newspaper over a spat dealing with the dishonesty of that the Times' senior editors dealing with what we shall call being "objective" v. favoring over one political persuasion over another. I do not have enough space here to go through the history on this matter, but it is worth studying the matter (try the Bari Weiss Wikipedia entry) Regardless, the main reason for this post is that The Free Press is a roaring success both critically and financially. Apparently hundreds of thousands of readers desire to pay $6 for this substack publication. I contrast this success with the failures of Buzz Feed and many others so-called revolutionary "it" publications such #Puck. I might even list #BusinessInsider as an "it" publication, but it has no doubt been financially saved by a large German media company. No doubt it would have failed a long time ago without a sugar daddy as it depended on the nastiness of its erstwhile EIC to gain clicks. Back to The Free Press. Nearly everyday some of the great reporters from earlier years such as #JoeNocera (NY Times) are staples of The Free Press. Every Sunday #DouglasMurray delves into literary and historical great writers by producing solid historical essays and wonderful literary pieces. My only fear about The Free Press' longevity is that it in becoming successful is that one day it might sell itself to the horrible type publications from which it was born. Hopefully Bari Weiss and company will hold out forever and truly be "all the news that's fit to print."

🚨 Scholars interested in working with the media: In a survey of 1,000+ journalists on the state of journalism in 2024 by Muck Rack ... 83% of journalists prefer to be pitched 1:1 via email. 🔑 Make sure you personalize the message with specific mentions of their work, including their name, etc. Making sure the journalist covers your topic is also v important. 65% prefer pitches less than 200 words. 🔑 Keep it simple and succinct by just stating the most interesting part of the research - more than likely this is the findings! Lean into active language and cut the filler words. 46% receive 6 or more pitches daily. 🔑 Write a killer email subject line that is less than 60-80 characters, then get right to the point in your email body. Journalists consider subject matter experts (82%) and researchers (77%) to be the most credible sources. 🔑 That means you! Journalist Writing Competition This activation is designed to increase journalists' enthusiasm to attend the event and produce more high-quality articles.
