In our latest article, Meagan Doll, PhD explores how peace journalism is adapted across contexts by examining the social profiles of East African journalists who attended peace journalism training. Using field theory and 20 in-depth interviews, the author identifies shared traits among participants—high education levels, career volatility, conflict experience, and interventionist role conceptions. These attributes provide the cultural and social capital necessary for adopting and adapting peace journalism, highlighting the role of individual agency in shaping journalistic norms. New research alert: My latest research, co-authored with Lucinda Davenport and Robin Blom, has been published in Journalism & Mass Communication Educator. We explored journalism students' motivations and role conceptions at two U.S. universities. We found that students are drawn to journalism for a mix of reasons, including civic engagement, a prestigious career, creativity in multimedia and writing, and an independent lifestyle. Our findings highlight the importance of journalism in providing political accountability, connecting with audiences, and shaping the political agenda. https://lnkd.in/gc-aDrKG

Exciting News! I'm happy to share that I’ve recently published two new papers on the representation of journalism in fiction! 📺 The first study looks at five popular Flemish TV series and how they depict journalism. Unlike many American fiction, these series portray journalism in a negative light, focusing more on commercial interests than the public good. They suggest that journalists and government officials should work together to serve society better. The study also found that gender stereotypes are still present in these series, highlighting the need for more diverse representations in Flemish fiction. 🎬 The second publication, a collaboration with fellow PhD student Femke De Sutter, dives into the movie 'The French Dispatch' and how it shows the intersection of journalism and age. The movie paints a picture of journalists as somewhat isolated, especially older women, who are portrayed as “old maids.” It also touches on generational conflicts, particularly around journalistic neutrality, and explores the role of a veteran editor who fights to maintain journalistic integrity against commercial pressures. The film gives a nostalgic view of journalism as it used to be. I'm passionate about continuing the conversation around media representation of journalism!
