Executive Editor at Columbia Journalism Review

Personal update: I'm joining Columbia University - Graduate School of Journalism as the next executive editor of Columbia Journalism Review. I'm so excited to take the helm of this storied publication, which has always been a leading voice on journalistic ethics and decision-making and trends in our industry. I believe CJR has the potential to advocate for journalists worldwide as they confront pressing challenges — technological disruption, authoritarianism, misinformation, attacks on the free press — while explaining to the public why journalism matters more than ever. I'm so excited to work with Dean Jelani Cobb, Ph.D. and with CJR Board Chair Rebecca Blumenstein and with the CJR staff, including deputy editors Betsy Morais and Ravi Somaiya. And I'm thrilled to be moving back to my hometown of NYC! https://lnkd.in/g44jPscd

Congratulations, Sewell! You set the bar very high for all of us covering City Hall in NYC and I'm grateful to have had the chance to get to know you and see you in action early in my New York reporting career.

Wow! Congratulations Sewell! So glad to have you back in NYC. 🎉

Sad to see you go Sewell, but I guess New York is a fine second choice to Austin. I trust that CJR will thrive under your leadership. My very best, always...

Sewell, you're perfect for this position. As a former CJR columnist and as a contributor of both articles and money going back more than 40 years. I know how important CJR is in promoting high standards.

Back in Manhattan, eh? Congrats, and around January I'll remind you that you can visit Cal State Fullerton any time. The orange trees across the street from the Communications Department should be dropping fruit around then.

So pleased for you Sewell. A great position for you, and with you at the CJR helm, I look forward to deepening our relationship with the Columbia journalism school -- we have two outstanding Columbia grads as fellows this summer.
