Interesting video about Alberta's innovations and accomplishments towards the emissions reduction goals mainly in the oil & gas sector but also in many others as well.

🌍🛢️⛽️🔥♨️ Today could be a very significant day in the fight to curb emissions in the U.K. The Supreme Court has today ruled that the emissions from burning the fuel extracted from fossil fuel extraction sites and their impact on global heating should be considered before approving licenses, not just the emissions caused by the extraction process itself and on this basis has refused planning permission for the retention and expansion of an oil well site near London’s Gatwick airport. This should set a precedent that can be applied against other future projects effectively bringing the granting of permission for new oil and gas projects in the U.K. to a halt in line with the science that states that we cannot afford to burn all of the fossil fuels that we already have access to, let alone add to that with new gas and oil projects if we are to have any chance of keeping global heating within boundaries that keep us away from high chances of global catastrophe. Extract from the Reuters article: “Campaigners said the landmark judgment would make it much harder for new oil, gas and coal developments to get approval, and other controversial schemes would be impacted. "This historic ruling is a watershed moment in the fight to stop further fossil fuel extraction projects in the UK and make the emissions cuts needed to meet crucial climate targets," Friends of the Earth lawyer Katie de Kauwe said.” https://lnkd.in/enpJAuQA

By Joseph Fournier • 22 Jul 2024 • "When we consider that Alberta’s peatlands are a mere 10% of national peatland landscapes, it is fair to suggest that Canada’s peatland ecosystem mean CH4 (methane) emissions are 10 times higher than those from Alberta alone. Finally, if more advanced methods were used instead of cheap flux chambers, actual background emission rates and their variability, would be significantly higher than 10x that of the oil and gas sector. I would be more than happy to address specific questions from our regulators or from academia as to how I arrived at these values.

The methane-leak-hunting satellite 'MethaneSat' which scans the earth daily measuring methane emissions from oil&gas infrastructure and other sources, is already proving its value. Methane is 80 times more potent of a greenhouse gas than CO2 during its first 20 years in the atmosphere.. "MethaneSAT’s early findings are that the oil and gas industry is belching the gas at a rate three to five times higher on average than what the Environmental Protection Agency has estimated, and way beyond the rate the industry itself agreed to in 2023." https://lnkd.in/gqaHmGug

Did you know a recent ICF study found U.S. LNG exports could reduce global GHG emissions by up to 381 million tons of CO2 emissions annually by 2030. As our leaders in Washington work to advance our clean energy goals, they must embrace pragmatic policy measures that focus on facts, not emotions.
