I strongly believe in the possibility and the need to change the way humans and companies interact with nature. Academia and practice must cooperate closely to overcome the dominant anthropocentric perspective that characterizes the current growth model. To do so, it is necessary to recognize the inevitable interconnections between the socioeconomic system and the ecological system, according to a systemic perspective that considers humans and nature as parts of the same whole. My research focuses on how companies - as a pivotal declination of human activities - can address and manage the complexity that characterizes their interplay with the natural environment, adopting the lenses of paradox theory and systems thinking to explore different sustainability issues such as the circular economy or biodiversity." 📧 Send me a DM if you want to join! Our most recent UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES Coalition Hub ~ The Cologne Hub is a Thematic Hub focusing on PLANETARY WELL-BEING: HEALTHY PEOPLE, RESILIENT COMMUNITIES, RECOVERING ECOLOGIES. This hub is led by two leading research institutions at the University of Cologne (UoC): the research hub for Multidisciplinary Environmental Studies in the Humanities (MESH) and the Global South Studies Center (GSSC).The Cologne hub addresses the intersections between the SDGs related to Good Health and Wellbeing (3), Quality Education (4), Sustainable Cities and Communities (11) and Life on Land (15). It brings a cross-cultural, multispecies, and humanities-led approach to the further development of the “one health” concept. The Cologne Hub has a focus on developing collaborative research and participatory approaches in North-South-South eco-humanities interventions in order to re-evaluate and localize concepts and methodologies connected to the SDGs. Eco Summer Camp, 18th - 25th August 2024 The Eco Summer Camp is an interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and cross-generational sustainability week. Together with outstanding experts, participants will have the opportunity to discuss current global ecological and socio-economic challenges. We will explore sustainable strategies to tackle these challenges and ways to change our own habits. The Eco Summer Camp is also a summer school. This gives our participants the opportunity to earn 4 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits. However, it is not compulsory to apply for ECTS points to participate in the Eco Summer Camp and we warmly encourage non-students to apply. Looking for a good read this summer? Then you might like to consider one of these 30 personal recommendations, all of which have provided me with great insight into why current environmental concerns, social issues, green tech and the economy are all interconnected - yes, even soil health, bird song and doughnut economics.    If you happen to be holidaying in the countryside, I would definitely recommend any of the books about rewilding, trees and recordings of animal sounds. I found it gave me a heightened awareness of what I saw and heard around me… more experiential than going to any contemporary art exhibition! And with your new found knowledge, going on another bear hunt with your children or grandchildren will be even more exciting than the last!   These books continue to provoke my curiosity and provide a holistic understanding of the world I thought I knew well, but evidently didn't. Controversies and Tensions Around Ecological Transitions" (ISTE and Wiley, 2024). https://lnkd.in/enyRe9GV Transitioning towards a more sustainable world is currently a central topic receiving a lot of attention. As a result, “transitions” are becoming key objects and the drivers of exchanges, communications and controversy in modern society. This book examines the tensions and controversies surrounding the energy, ecological and social transitions currently underway, and it draws on tools developed in the humanities and social sciences, in particular the information and communication sciences. The various case studies gathered here, written by leading experts in environmental communication, examine a wide range of topics; they explore transitions in a number of different fields, from agriculture to territorial policies, and from online and media communication to mechanisms for citizen participation. Our #CircularEconomy research has been published in the journal Resources, Conservation & Recycling. In this paper we combine #LCA and industrial ecology methods with system dynamics to measure spatial trade-offs between environmental impacts/benefits linked to increased material circularity. In our case study of Montreal's construction sector between 2017 and 2050, we estimate circularity will reduce environmental burdens in most locations where material production occurs, but these improvements disproportionally benefit wealthier, more developed nations. Meanwhile, impacts due to reuse and remanufacture are expected to increase in the city. Overall, material circularity is environmentally beneficial, but there are risks these benefits will be unevenly and unfairly distributed.
