Today is National Philanthropy Day and we’d like to celebrate Western Union employees who have given back by volunteering and contributing to the communities where we live and work. We’re proud to share that our employees have already tracked more than 22,000 volunteer hours this year! Thank you to everyone who is giving back to our local and global communities and making a difference for those who need it most.

At Philanthropy Northwest, the values of place and joy are at the heart of our mission. My family’s history in the Northwest—from my Japanese grandfather’s immigration to first Alaska and then Seattle over a century ago to my great-grandmother’s work in the strawberry fields of Vashon Island—shapes my perspective on these values. In my recent blog, I delve into how we at Philanthropy Northwest embody these principles and share personal experiences that highlight their significance. I invite you to take a moment to read it and explore the importance of place and joy in our work!

As a new Foundation CEO, I derive so much inspiration from Lori Bezahler at Edward W. Hazen Foundation. They operated with courage and humility, listening closely to community organizers and internalizing those lessons in their grantmaking practice. Listen to our conversation about Hazen’s decision to spend down the endowment (aka going all in), the power imbalances between funders and grantees, operationalizing social justice values in foundation work, and much more. https://lnkd.in/eua_QtEN
WATCH NOW: In a compelling dialogue with Vivian Tseng, president and CEO of the Foundation for Child Development, Lori Bezahler, former president of the Edward W. Hazen Foundation shares an inside look at the Hazen Foundation’s groundbreaking journey—a journey marked by direct action and collaborative decision-making with grantees to advance social justice. This conversation challenges conventional philanthropy and highlights the power of community-driven change. https://lnkd.in/eua_QtEN #socialjustice #philanthropy #capacitybuilding #FCDConversationSeries

Philanthropy has often been seen through a traditional lens, but it's time to rethink and reshape it to be more inclusive and equitable. "First, we made a call to philanthropy to step up and commit to taking meaningful action to change systems, practices, and policies within organizations, the field, and society. This included a call to make unprecedented investments in the short- and long-term to support Black movement, infrastructure, leadership, and responsive efforts, along with substantive and ongoing investment in our emerging vision." A timely in this #BlackHistoryMonth https://lnkd.in/gy8nVPmh
"Sometimes, it felt like we couldn’t breathe. Other times, it felt like we were living in a once-in-a-lifetime, limited moment of opportunity to bring forth tangible systemic and cultural change. Often, we felt both these things at once. Living within our bodies and within our communities, while pushing one of the most powerful sectors in the world—philanthropy—to transform, took a toll on us. We put everything on the line—our time, resources, jobs, hearts, and minds—and led with vulnerability and courage to challenge the making and function of a system that often did not include or believe in people like us."
