The Monty Hall problem is a well-known conundrum in probability theory related to the U.S. television game show Let's Make a Deal. It is named after the show's host, Monty Hall. Here's how it works: The contestant is faced with three closed doors. Behind one of them is a car, while the other two hide a goat. The player can choose one of the three doors. After the player's initial choice, the host (who knows what is behind each door) opens one of the other two doors, revealing a goat. At this point, the handler offers the player the opportunity to change his or her initial choice and move on to the one remaining door. The convenient choice is to switch. As a film composer, I've always been fascinated by how music can transform a story, adding depth and emotion that words alone can't convey. Whether it's the suspenseful strings in a thriller, the uplifting melodies in a romance, or the haunting textures and harmonies in a drama, music is the invisible thread that ties a film's narrative together "and the emotional undercurrent of the film" (Simon Franglen, composer of Avatar 2: The Way of Water, Cannes Film Festival, May 2024) Below I have attached my showreel of all the incredible collaborations that I have had, including collaborations with Spitfire Audio, Abbey Road Studios, Blender, Matthew Todd, Karolina Smolova, Javan Ng, Sandy Gemmill and many more. What is real and what is fake? A group working together, whether that's a family, a business, or a country needs to be able to agree on this. In the digital realm this question is becoming very tricky indeed. If we can't believe our own eyes and ears when it comes to digital media, how can we reach consensus in complex settings on critical questions? Is the image we're seeing directly from the sensor, or modified in some important way? Is the financial dataset we're buying a complete and accurate representation of the data as it was recorded? Is the video we're seeing from a police bodycam missing any critical seconds? As people increasingly rely on digital information, the challenge of assuring the authenticity of that data will grow. But anyone who watches on YouTube now will hear a corrected version.
