Bucking Generational Stereotypes

Bucking Generational Stereotypes

You might have seen this image circulating around LinkedIn recently. While I know it says it is based on 1,200 survey responses, I cannot help but disagree with the findings presented in this infographic.

While the general stereotypes are likely directionally accurate, to summarize that Millennials only excel at being tech savvy and they are lazy, while Baby Boomers are less collaborative but more cost-effective is just simply false. I currently have, and have had in the past, the privilege of working with Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, and Millennials alike. I have found with the right leadership, coaching, and motivation, the most effective team is a cross-generational team. I have worked with Millennials who have great executive presence, Baby Boomers innovating in the software industry, and savvy Gen Xers who run very successful businesses. In every case, the inherent weaknesses of the team have been solved by its diverse strengths.

My takeaway – fewer stereotypes and greater leadership!

I couldn't agree with you more. These sweeping generalizations are dangerous. Understanding trends in the macro environment is important, but this silly infographic goes beyond that. As Adam Grant wrote in Originals, for every Orson Welles, whose first work at the age of 25 was a masterpiece, there is an Alfred Hitchcock who made his most popular films at age 59 and older. Greatness is not determined by your generation.

I totally agree. This survey is way off. Every generation can offer talent, enthusiasm and leadership. The sad part is "as a boomer" even though you are healthy, youthful, energetic and "a lot" wiser. You are not needed in this current environment. sadin so

Completely agree! This graphic is trite and the boomer's hands look like they are searching for pizzas. I say this terrible infographic is cray cray.
