Loving People Can Change the World

Loving People Can Change the World

I woke up tired and a little sore today, which is a good feeling.   I was blessed the last two days to be able to volunteer at River Heights Vineyard's Thanksgiving giveaway. Even though I do not attend this Church regularly, Pastor Pete and friends allow me the privilege to help out when I can.   There are several people I consider friends there, and no matter how infrequently I come, they greet me with a big hug and love. This sense of belonging and acceptance is what makes this community so special. For twenty-four years, River Heights Vineyard has held this event. This yearly event allows them to show who they are as a church and give back to the community that they serve.

The Church was open to the community for two days, and there was something for everyone. Downstairs, there were crafts and activities for the kids. Upstairs, one of the sanctuaries was converted into a clothing store. It was full of new and slightly used items, and everything was free. Then there was the food. Complimentary breakfast and lunch were available for all who came. Then, after a motivational message, the volunteers carried full Thanksgiving meals for their families to their cars, making a significant impact on the community.

Our communities need more events like this. One obstacle is the need for volunteers. River Heights is not a large church, but they do great things through love and their time commitment. Think about the times you feel too tired to make dinner. The volunteers worked an eight-hour day and showed up and made 800 sloppy joes. Packing the Thanksgiving meals also takes a lot of people. People must assemble cardboard totes, set up the staging area, unload the turkeys, and pack the food. I am deeply grateful for their dedication and hard work.

I have written before encouraging everyone to find something that they can do to make a difference in their community. The holidays are a great time to start. The families you help are just like your own. They are mothers, fathers, grandparents, and children, all in need of someone to share their time and talents. The effort you give will make a difference. As they say at River Heights, "Love God, Love People, and change the world."

Happy Thanksgiving.
