Possible | Devshi Mehrotra on AI, justice, and public defense
America’s criminal justice system relies on public defenders to represent people without access to private attorneys. But public defenders are chronically under-resourced and overburdened with caseloads. In many U.S. jurisdictions, the police department's overtime budget alone exceeds the entire budget of the public defender's office. Can technology be used to alleviate some of that strain and, in effect, make the criminal justice system more just?
Devshi Mehrotra says yes. Devshi is co-founder and CEO of JusticeText , a startup providing attorneys with AI tools to better serve clients and enhance police accountability. I'm a proud investor in JusticeText—and a strong believer in the impact that technologists like Devshi and her co-founder Leslie Jones-Dove can have by developing tools to address societal problems.
Aria Finger and I enjoyed speaking with Devshi about JusticeText’s offerings and opportunities, along with public-private partnerships and local governments’ evolving attitudes toward AI and innovation.

2wAI is rewriting the rules of business—and websites are a perfect example. What once required a team of designers and developers can now be done by a single person using AI-powered platforms. Need a logo? AI has it covered. Marketing strategies? AI tools can generate them. Building websites and online businesses has never been easier, breaking down barriers to entry and democratizing entrepreneurship. Small businesses and startups can now compete with industry giants. But here’s the flipside: this rapid change is whipsawing industries and redefining earning potential. As automation takes over both repetitive and skilled tasks, the value of human labor is being re-evaluated. Entire sectors are being reshaped, displacing jobs, and stagnating wages for many. While AI-savvy businesses and individuals thrive, others face challenges in adapting. What’s the solution? It’s not banning AI—because those who embrace it will dominate industries and drive down costs (we’ve seen this before with globalization and manufacturing). The challenge is somehow adapting before it’s too late. (Your thoughts?)
