What does "history" mean?

I was born in the country where history was re-written on a routine basis. In the Orwellian manner, people were erased, both figuratively and literally... Where does one stop when re-thinking the past?

Shall we demolish all royal statues, and palaces for that matter, in the UK - because monarchs were part of then normal colonialism (and, indirectly, slave trade, opium trade and piracy)?

Shall we abolish religion and shut down the churches, because some priests - and even, allegedly, the Vatican - were linked to crimes, including child abuse? Shall we close down the Parliament because MPs were failing to protect sexual minorities for so long? My grandfather was killed in the WWII in 1943 - shall we ban Germany from G7 in 2020?

Shall Spotify et all remove the songs that glorify violence and crime? Or explicit songs which my children find offensive? Shall Emmy recall all awards to gangsta rappers? Shall Oscar recall awards to movies that portray slavery, killings, drugs and other vice?

Shall we close down the libraries not to offend those who cannot read? Or because they hold books that tell the stories from the past, including slave trading and piracy? Shall we ask Amazon to remove all such books?..

Is that a good man?.. Millions of people rely on his company every day. Thousands complain (perhaps not without a reason). His company sells products that makes our lives better. It also sells products some people may find offending. His company put many smaller rivals out of business. His company helps thousands of small traders make a living.

If I met with Donald Trump today, I can boast about it. Were some "Donaldgate" happen in the future, would I become an enemy of the state and people?

History is an evolving matter. Historic events happen in real time. Social norms change over time. Applying 20/20 hindsight to the past does not always work, as down the road we can be erased from history too. Shall we pretend some things didn't happen or learn from them? That's exactly what history is all about: the word history comes from Ancient Greek ἱστορία - historía - meaning “narration of what is learned”.

I see a lot of irrational and emotional decisions these days. It reminds me dealing with a cranky child, who is allowed to do anything she wants just to calm down. Stressed up parents are running in circles offering new toys and activities to please the child hoping “it’ll pass, she’ll outgrow, she is teething” or any other excuse to tolerate and explain own irrational behavior.
