Today we’re celebrating a year of our Digital Futures Project; a program we established to support a range of independent thinkers working to understand and address the opportunities and challenges of AI. In addition to convening experts from industry, civil society and academia, we also support research from leading think tanks and academic institutions worldwide — thanks to support from Google.org. Their valuable insights cover a variety of areas, including: 📃 AI governance 🔒 How AI is reshaping the cybersecurity landscape 📈 The economic impact of AI To learn more about the Digital Futures Project and its impact on AI, read here 👉 https://goo.gle/3ZPlgxw

The path to building a useful quantum computer is becoming more clear, and my colleagues on our Google Quantum AI team shared an important and exciting step forward today in the results we published in Nature for Willow, our new state-of-the-art Quantum chip. Willow is the first quantum processor where error-corrected qubits get exponentially better as they get bigger. As my colleague Hartmut Neven shared today, this is exciting for two reasons: “The first is that Willow can reduce errors exponentially as we scale up using more qubits. This cracks a key challenge in quantum error correction that the field has pursued for almost 30 years. Second, Willow performed a standard benchmark computation in under five minutes that would take one of today’s fastest supercomputers 10 septillion (that is, 10^25) years — a number that vastly exceeds the age of the Universe.” The breakthrough Willow represents is exciting as its performance and ability to exponentially reduce errors brings us closer to unlocking the power of quantum mechanics for real-world applications - more still to do though! Ultrasound technology is affordable and portable, but in areas without trained sonographers, pregnant people miss out on critical screenings, leading to an increased risk of complications and delays in diagnosis. To help, Google Health is researching how AI can determine important information about the health of a fetus — expanding obstetrics care to pregnant people in places with limited healthcare resources. Learn more about how AI can increase access to ultrasounds here: https://goo.gle/4g1JNoI

Today, we’re excited to announce that one million graduates have completed the Google Career Certificates program. In the United States, nearly 74% of job postings require a college degree, but less than 40% of people have one, leaving many good jobs out of reach for 70 million Americans*. Employers were also struggling to find people with specific skills for some of their most urgent needs. To help solve this problem and provide better access to high growth careers that pay well, we created the Google Career Certificates. This #GrowWithGoogle milestone reflects Google’s ongoing commitment to equip individuals with in-demand skills to succeed in today's workforce. Read more about the inspiring stories of graduates from around the world: https://goo.gle/3Zzxydl *Opportunity@Work’s mission is to unlock economic opportunity for the 70+ million U.S. workers who are Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs).
