How do you balance what you want to create with what the market demands? Actor and filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg encounters this problem constantly and shares how he sees commercial success. “I read a lot of good scripts, and I have friends who write a lot of good things,” he says. “But my biggest criticism of it is always: This is great. There is no room in the marketplace.” Jesse doesn’t believe in sacrificing authenticity to give your projects a greater reach, but he stresses that there has to be an audience in mind. “I'm not saying that you should reverse engineer your things to be commercial. I'm just saying they have to be something that can exist in the world. And movies don't have to be for everybody, but they have to be for somebody.” How do you think about commercial success in your career? Who is your “audience” and how does your work speak to them? Let us know in the comments! For more on this, check out Jessi Hempel’s full conversation with Jesse Eisenberg on #HelloMonday. Did you read the fine print on your employment contract before signing it? Becca Farsace knew she signed a non-compete with The Verge, but she had no idea what it truly meant… Until she was hauled into a meeting and told she had violated it.
