A bit of a mystery object so dazzling and special its origin and previous function do not really feel that important. Made in the late 1800s. Judging by its style, it could have been crafted as far away as India - for export to Europe. Alternatively, it could have been made, say, in France in an exuberant oriental style so popular in the end of the 19th century. The luxury of the work together with peacock decorations might signify its ecclesiastical use, most likely in a Catholic (less probably - Orthodox) church. Someone even suggested it was used for ceremonial / courtly purposes, like carrying a crown or other precious objects in a procession. Who knows. I wish I could catch it in a picture how it glistens and sparkles. 48 cm x 47 cm. Charming antique condition with some signs of age.
