The braided part is much more durable (3x the string vs 1 piece of string) to withstand getting pulled. Yet, this cord is only .5mm thick (to fit the 11/0 seed beads), making it still, unfortunately, possible to break (I've had my husband pull in various directions on a new bracelet as hard as he can, and all he can do is stretch it out - so it should take a while for the bracelet to get to "breakable" level). I suggest you avoid water if you want to keep this bracelet, beads, and charm(s) in pristine condition.
