The West must stop flagellating itself: we are not the ‘neocolonialists’
Xi Jinping assumed the role of president of the People’s Republic of China in 2013 after joining the Communist Party at a young age and rising through the ranks. His leadership has focused domestically on poverty alleviation programs, property reforms and stricter regulations on the tech sector. Internationally Xi has expanded China’s influence in Asia and Africa with the Belt and Road infrastructure initiative, continued its border dispute with India in which skirmishes have killed tens of troops and bolstered its military presence in the South China Sea. He has been criticised for declining human rights such as the national security law in Hong Kong which curtailed political freedoms and the internment of the Uyghur ethnic minority in Xinjiang.
