Childhood is in our Hands campaign

Learn more about the official 100-day countdown to the Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children.

This campaign was launched on 30 July to mark the 100-day countdown to the Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children and urge governments to end violence against children as part of a united social media push for governments to attend the conference.

It calls for governments to prioritize three breakthrough approaches to have the broadest and most enduring impact:

  • Parent and caregiver support to prevent abuse and neglect while promoting safe, stable and nurturing relationships.
  • Universal access to safe and enabling school environments.
  • Response and support services that are accessible to all children who need them.

On 17 September, the In Our Hands campaign launched its open letter to world leaders to take bold action at the Global Ministerial. The letter was signed by numerous high-profile advocates, survivor leaders, and allies, including several members of the Global Survivor Council.

Global Survivor Council

Violence Against Children Ministerial Global Survivor Council

The Brave Movement has been tasked by the Global Ministerial with developing the official guidance notes on engaging survivors at the Conference and leading the coordination of a Global Survivor Council (GSC) via an open application process.

The GSC brings together individuals from survivor-led networks across the globe, who can speak to all forms of violence against children. It will play a crucial role in ensuring continuous survivor engagement in the design and delivery of the conference as well as the final political declaration.

"When I was contacted to join the Brave Movement I was so thoroughly excited to accept. I have absolutely dreamed that someone would invest as a true philanthropist to endorse a survivor-led movement to enable this ground-breaking platform; to care enough about survivors. This is an opportunity to establish and craft a global platform of our choosing, built with our passion for every child so that we leave no one behind. Through our global reach we can advance our passion to address abuse in all its dreadful forms, and be the voice that is needed for those who don’t yet have one, for those whom no one has wanted to know about. It’s time for politicians and leaders to be brave so that they can deliver enhanced and improved agendas and ensure legal reform that is so critically needed. This issue is crushed by the weight of silence - not words - and through Brave it is my obligation to fill that silence and advocate for every child. I’m armed with a voice and I'm not going to keep quiet, I know too much to walk away from this issue to live peacefully. I want survivors everywhere to know that we can be affected by what was done to us but we are not determined by it. And that life can be made beautiful regardless of where we are made to start from." "I joined the Brave movement because it is a unique chance for survivors to join forces in the world to end childhood sexual violence. Together we are strong. Together we are not alone anymore, feeling ashamed and guilty. Together we can be a driving force to foster a better and a safer world for children and adolescents." Anonymous survivors on the Global Survivors Council

The Brave Movement is committed to the healing and safety of GSC members. This includes the ability for members to engage anonymously. Anonymous engagement empowers GSC members to bring their expertise and contribute to policy development, strategic advisement, and other key council discussions without revealing their personal information or location.

Three members of the GSC are participating anonymously and are not displayed here.

Break the Record campaign

With over 120 countries attending, we’ll attempt to break the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the most countries represented at a childhood violence summit at the first-ever Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children.

Together, we can also break an even more important record: The world’s record of inaction against childhood sexual violence. In the last year, 82 million girls and 69 million boys have experienced some form of sexual violence globally. This is approximately 3 girls and 2 boys per second.

In a first-of-its-kind approach, Together for Girls and partners have created a book called ‘Break the Record’ to measure and understand childhood sexual violence and offer a practical framework to end it.

This data is essential to inform evidence-based policies and interventions to ultimately end childhood sexual violence.

Your government may be one of the 120 at the first-ever Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children. Use the Break the Record social media toolkit to:

  1. Share world-first data to build awareness of the record number of children experiencing sexual violence.

  2. Share solutions to end childhood sexual violence, for good.

  3. Take action to end childhood sexual violence, and encourage others to do so.

Visit www.BreakTheRecord.org to read the book and learn how you can take action to help us end childhood sexual violence for good.

Our Break the Record partners

Break the Record contains world-first data on the prevalence of sexual violence against children globally, launched by Unicef with support from Together for Girls and our partners, as well as unique data compiled by Together for Girls in collaboration with the World Health Organization, Georgia State University, China Agricultural University, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the University of Edinburgh.

“For so long I felt very alone, I knew that countless other victims and survivors were out there, but I didn’t know any of them and never experienced the kind of peer support that I now know is invaluable in our recovery journeys. I am proud to be part of the Brave Movement because I want victims and survivors around the world to see that they are not alone and not powerless - we have power and influence in our collective voices and we are fighting, both with them and for them, to end child sexual abuse.” Rhiannon-Faye McDonald Head of Advocacy, Marie Collins Foundation, Co-founder Brave Movement
