At the close of 2024, the Grow Great Campaign brought together leaders and changemakers in Johannesburg for the Grow Great Stunting Summit, themed “Courageous Action to End Stunting”. The summit spotlighted the pressing issue of child stunting in South Africa — a public health crisis affecting 29% of children under five. Stunting is not just a health issue but a social and economic challenge with long-term consequences for education, employment, and national growth. In her opening address, Dr Edzani Mphaphuli, Executive Director of Grow Great, reminded us: "Stunting is not merely a statistic. It is a reality impacting millions of children, their families, and the future of our society. The time for courageous action is now. Together, we can ensure every child thrives and reaches their full potential." The summit featured thought-provoking discussions on maternal health, breastfeeding, and the challenges of food affordability, alongside a call to action for stakeholders to commit to strategies that prioritise nutrition in the first 1 000 days of a child’s life. Let’s unite to make zero stunting a reality. Visit our 'Let's Close the Food Gap' webpage to learn more about stunting and what you can do to help end stunting. During the #16DaysOfActivism, we honour the vital work of community-based organisations (CBOs) tackling gender-based violence through the Sukuthula! Unmute & Act initiative, with our partners the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project and The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. 36 CBOs in Limpopo and the Eastern Cape are driving grassroots action by empowering survivors, fostering youth leadership, creating safe spaces, and advocating systemic change. Their work highlights the power of trust-based funding to amplify community-led solutions to GBV. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build safer, more inclusive communities. 🚨 The relationship between gender-based violence (GBV) and alcohol is multi-faceted and deeply interconnected. It needs urgent action The First South African National Gender-Based Violence Study (2022) reveals how hazardous drinking perpetuates violence and leaves vulnerable communities at risk. Key Findings: - Men's hazardous alcohol use is a significant driver of intimate partner violence. - Harmful gender norms, coupled with alcohol abuse, create a toxic cycle that fuels GBV. In August 2020, DGMT CEO, David Harrison, addressed the Portfolio Committee on Social Development about the link between alcohol and gender-based violence. His presentation outlined practical, actionable steps to tackle this dual crisis. 🎥 Watch his full presentation and explore measures to break this cycle of violence: https://loom.ly/k834O-U #AlcoholHarmsReduction #ReThinkYourDrink #16DaysOfActivism #GBV

📢 Did you know? Fewer than a third of South Africans drink, yet we're one of the world's heaviest-drinking nations. To combat the significant loss of alcohol-related harms, the National Treasury released the Alcohol Taxation Review, with substantial changes for excise taxes for beverages like beer and wine. DGMT’s Campaign Manager for the Alcohol Harms Reduction Campaign, Kashifa Ancer, explains a key pricing mechanism in the review: Minimum Unit Pricing (MUP). What will the effect of MUP be on South Africa’s alcohol consumption? DGMT CEO David Harrison details the likely impact in an op-ed saying, “The overall effect of the MUP is likely to be healthier, safer drinking patterns.” Do you have thoughts on the National Treasury’s proposals? 📖 Read the op-ed and make your voice heard by submitting your public comment by 13 December 2024. Visit https://loom.ly/vmLbMzY to read the op-ed. Tell Treasury your thoughts on MUP here: 2024Alcoholreview@treasury.gov.za #ReThinkYourDrink #AlcoholHarmReduction #DGMT

🌍 Navigating change in complex social systems Creating meaningful change in complex social systems, like poverty and climate change, is challenging and non-linear. Systemic change requires a deep understanding of ingrained behaviours and patterns. In the second learning brief of Hand-On Learning issue 28, Ilifa Labantwana offers essential insights for systems change catalysts—practitioners, funders, and policymakers—working to shift dynamics within the South African early childhood development ecosystem. 📘 This is a unique opportunity to gain practical lessons on creating impact.
