Spicy Pizza Topping

Spicy Pizza Topping is a condiment created by the Puckered Pickle Company in Chicago, Illinois. The product, packaged under company's Alpino brand, is a mix of finely chopped imported hot peppers, ripe olives along with celery, carrots, cauliflower and spices in 100% soybean oil. The popular use for this condiment is as a topping on a hot slice of pizza.<ref name="test">Link Text It's also used on hamburgers, sandwiches, salads and mixed with eggs among other dishes.

Spicy Pizza Topping came about as a result of an oil stain on a pair of pants.

John Vetter, Vice President of Sales for the Puckered Pickle Company, arrived home one day to find his teenage son enjoying a large pizza with some friends. The group was adding hot Giardiniera peppers to their slices of hot pizza which looked tasty to Vetter. But when he went to add the hot giardiniera to his slice, some of the larger chunks of vegetables and peppers fell on his dress pants. Immediately Vetter thought that there had to be an easier way to add one of his favorite condiments to a slice of pizza without adding to his cleaning bill.

The next day Vetter met with the Puckered Pickle R & D Department to determine if they could take the existing recipe for their Alpino brand Hot Giardiniera and reformulate it in a way that would make it easier to drizzle on to a slice of pizza without falling off. A finer-chopped product along with a few added ingredients for a slightly different flavor profile was born. The Spicy Pizza Topping was packaged in 16 oz. jars and became available in supermarkets like Meijer, H-E-B, Schnuck's, Giant Eagle and independent stores throughout the country.
