Hell in a Cell is an upcoming professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which will take place on October 4, 2009 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.[2] It will feature talent from the Raw, SmackDown, and ECW brands.[3] The name of the event was voted by fans via WWE's official website. Hell in a Cell was chosen over No Escape, Lock Up and Rage in a Cage.[4] Four matches are currently featured on the card.

Background

[edit]

Hell in a Cell will feature numerous professional wrestling matches, with its main event matches contested as Hell in a Cell matches.[4] It will involve different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that will be played out on Raw, SmackDown, ECW and WWE SuperstarsWorld Wrestling Entertainment's (WWE) television programs. Wrestlers will portray a villain or a hero as they follow a series of events that build tension, and culminate into a wrestling match or series of matches.[5] All wrestlers will be from WWE's Raw, SmackDown, and ECW brands—a storyline division in which WWE employees are assigned to a television program of the same name.[6]

The main rivalry from the Raw brand is between John Cena and Randy Orton over their vying for the WWE Championship; at SummerSlam, Orton had retained the title in a controversial fashion that saw him intentionally get disqualified before ultimately retaining the title; World Wrestling Entertainment owner, Vince McMahon, announced a rematch at WWE Breaking Point; it would be an "I Quit" match at WWE Breaking Point, which was won by Cena.[7][8][9] The following night on Raw, Orton received a rematch for the title from the night's guest matchmaker Trish Stratus at Hell in a Cell in the eponymous match.[10]

Triple H and Shawn Michaels reformed their tag team unit D-Generation X at SummerSlam in a winning effort against Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes (collectively known as The Legacy).[11] Their confrontations continued in the coming weeks before leading to a falls count anywhere match that can only be won by submission, which saw The Legacy get the victory.[12] After one last major brawl between both teams the following night on Raw, it was announced later that night they would face one more time at the event in a Hell in a Cell match of their own.[10]

New WWE Superstar, Kyle Johnson has told The Legacy that after he gets done with them in the Tag Team Hell in a Cell Match where he teams with D-Generation X to face Legacy He told Former WWE Champion Randy Orton that no matter if its for the WWE Championship at WWE Bragging Rights he wants him in the ring One on One.

John Morrison won the Intercontinental Championship against Rey Mysterio on September 1 2009 on an episode of Smackdown. As it was Dolph Ziggler who was the Number 1 Contender for the Intercontinental Championship, it was made by General Manager of Smackdown Theodore Long for this match to be at WWE Hell In A Cell.
