[edit]Hi there, do you have any more comments on Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Siege of Baghdad/archive1? You don’t have to support or oppose, just would like to know if you have any more comments. Thanks, ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 21:24, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

How do I rename articles? --Kolano123 (talk) 09:40, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Kolano123 once you've made your 10th edit you'll have WP:AUTOCONFIRM status which will allow you to WP:Move most pages (read the documentation), which is how articles might be "renamed". But be careful when doing this. There are technical restrictions, for example when a target already exists as a WP:redirect and talk page discussions might have established a consensus already. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 10:23, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Do you have any strategies or tips for finding sources and updating articles? --Auditxx (talk) 16:50, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Auditxx Finding sources is quite a challenge, because it depends on what journals, newspapers you have access to and dealing with copyright. I tend to use Archive.is (the website) for accessing certain newspapers. Once you've reached 500 edits and 30 days of activity, you also get access to Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Library which has a wide selection. You can always ask for finding sources at WP:Reference desk. I also will read existing sources and sometimes they reference or link to other papers, which can lead to interesting sources. Between that, and Google, I have found a lot of stuff. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 16:56, 1 October 2024 (UTC)

Good morning Shushugah
[edit]I wrote the article in the german wikipedia about Mario Lachat.Since he is rather well known also in the states and helped at many operations in GB, USA and Asia, he thinks, that it would be important thst his wikipedia article is translated in english, so he could be found by english speaking colleagues too. Could you helpme to translate the article in english? One of the wiki administrator mentioned, that he thinks the german article about Mario Lachat had only sources that were linked to him or his work and therefore not independent. But isnt it the nature of sources that they have to do with the person or his work? Thank you very much! Lester1960 (talk) 07:07, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Lester1960 I had a look at de:Mario Lachat. The most common notability guideline is WP:GNG which relies on in-depth WP:Secondary (non affiliated) sources that write about an article subject. WP:NACADEMIC is an alternative guideline where the accomplishments of an academic, including their writings and CV (because it is peer reviewed) is likely acceptable. I think the German version has some WP:PROMO fluff, that should be removed for example "he was cited over 10,000x" is meaningless without context, and the list of "first ever XYZ" is not neutral encyclopedic language. I will not write the article for you, but happy to give guidance/feedback on core policies of Wikipedia, to ensure your article is as high quality as it can be. Happy translating! ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 15:48, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much! Lester1960 (talk) 05:53, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
- Dear Shushugah
- I talked to Mario Lachat and the problem of the swiss publication system (or all systems) is on one hand that the way operations are published is not uniform so it is difficult to visualize/verify that an operation was the first because the documentation system for new operations is not standertized. The lack of other surgeons claiming for them that they were earlier doing this or that operation on the other hand since more then 20 years should be proof that he was the first to do it. The code system we use in Switzerland has the same problem since if there is no code for a new type of operation, normally the operators choose to take an existing alternative code that pictures best what he did.
- The fact that he was cited over 10'000 x shows a little bit how important his research was for this topic. So should I add this fact to the article?
- You know Lachat was a bit of a red rag for Swiss surgeons, so he was long time marginalized as someone who promoted endovascular techniques instead of "real surgery" (equal big incisions).
- I could ask the producers of such endovascular devices that are nowadays standartized, who was the first to order their devices but that would still not be a citatable source. Lester1960 (talk) 07:07, 10 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Skalidrisalba (15:44, 6 October 2024)
[edit]Hello, after posting on the talk page of the hypnosis article, many users have told me that referencing "alternative medicine" (CAM) journals are not acceptable. I do not understand this comment as hypnosis is viewed as an alternative medicine so it seems normal that most scientific articles about hypnosis would be published in these journals. I also do not understand how a whole topic can be considered as non acceptable (here, the topic of alternative medicine) despite reliable scientific method, can you explain it to me?
Now users are attempting to remove all the references that are published in these kind of journals solely based on the fact that they contain "alternative medicine" in their name... --Skalidrisalba (talk) 15:44, 6 October 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Hello! I've never edited Wikipedia before. [edit]Current work
[edit]Newcomer Homepage Community Updates module
We will add a new module to the Newcomer Homepage that will allow communities to highlight specific events, projects, campaigns, and initiatives. We have released a simple version on beta wikis and we will soon start an A/B test on our pilot wikis. This module will only display on the Newcomer Homepage if communities decide to utilize it, so learn how to configure the Community Updates module, or share your thoughts on the project's talk page.
Constructive activation experimentation
After showcasing early design ideas at Wikimania, we conducted user testing of design prototypes. We now aim to engage communities in further discussions and plan to run a targeted experiment, presenting a structured task within the reading view to logged-in new account holders with zero edits.
This Community Configuration extension was developed to help communities customize wiki features to meet their unique needs. The Growth team is now helping other Wikimedia Foundation teams make their products configurable:
- The Moderation Tools team now provides Community Configuration for Automoderator. (T365046)
- Certain Babel extension settings will be configurable soon. (T328171)
Future work
[edit]As part of the Growth team annual plan, we will continue to investigate ways to increase constructive activation on mobile, while also working with Data Products to move forward A/B testing functionality via the Metrics Platform.
Community events
[edit]- Growth team members presented Community Configuration: Shaping On-Wiki Functionality Together at Wikimania (slides). The session recording is available to watch on YouTube. This session provided an update on the Community Configuration project and introduced details about the upcoming features that communities will soon be able to configure. Representatives from the Moderator Tools, Editing, Web, and Campaigns teams shared their plans for utilizing Community Configuration in the future. Following these presentations, the WMF Growth team's Benoît Evellin and Martin Urbanec answered audience questions.
- Habib Mhenni gave a presentation of how mentorship works at WikiIndaba 2024. The recording is available.

[edit]How do I correct misinformation on Eastland mall being an enclosed mall. I lived close to there and shopped there while growing up. It was originally an open mall with covered walkways. It wasn’t enclosed & climate controlled. until 1975. How can I send you pics of this? Kalamazoo mall was built by same architect. --Linda M Lou (talk) 15:53, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Linda M Lou finding something incorrect on Wikipedia is a gem. While this claim seems uncontroversial and routine, we require WP:VERIFICATION namely a source. The claim that it was enclosed is also not present in the source used (this one) so you could remove it. Happy editing! ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 16:01, 4 November 2024 (UTC)

Right to sit law in Germany
[edit]Are you aware if there is a right to sit law in Germany? It is my understanding that it is culturally normalized in Germany for cashiers to sit down. All former administrators may now only regain the tools following a request at the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard within 5 years of their most recent admin action. Previously this applied only to administrators deysopped for inactivity.
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, T5, has been enacted. This applies to template subpages that are no longer used.
- Technical volunteers can now register for the 2025 Wikimedia Hackathon, which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. Application for travel and accommodation scholarships is open from November 12 to December 10, 2024.
- The arbitration case Yasuke (formerly titled Backlash to diversity and inclusion) has been closed.
- An arbitration case titled Palestine-Israel articles 5 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 14 December.
Palestine-Israel articles 5 updates
[edit]You are receiving this message because you are on the update list for Palestine-Israel articles 5. The drafters note that the scope of the case was somewhat unclear, and clarify that the scope is The interaction of named parties in the WP:PIA topic area and examination of the WP:AE process that led to two referrals to WP:ARCA
. Because this was unclear, two changes are being made:
First, the Committee will accept submissions for new parties for the next three days, until 23:59, 10 December 2024 (UTC). Anyone who wishes to suggest a party to the case may do so by creating a new section on the evidence talk page, providing a reason with WP:DIFFS as to why the user should be added, and notifying the user. After the three-day period ends, no further submission of parties will be considered except in exceptional circumstances. Because the Committee only hears disputes that have failed to be resolved by the usual means, proposed parties should have been recently taken to AE/AN/ANI, and either not sanctioned, or incompletely sanctioned. If a proposed party has not been taken to AE/AN/ANI, evidence is needed as to why such an attempt would have been ineffective.
Second, the evidence phase has been extended by a week, and will now close at 23:59, 21 December 2024 (UTC). For the Arbitration Committee, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 03:20, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
