Rename. Gonnym, would you be able to do the paperwork for this category? Thanks, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 01:44, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That should wait until the other CfD is closed. I think the idea was to switch over them all together. --Gonnym (talk) 15:10, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we'll do all the non-article categories in one go. We should coordinate so that the module changes occur at roughly the same time as the bot renames. Can we agree on a timescale for this, and I will prepare the code in the module sandbox — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:14, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What is the other discussion in question? Best, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 20:05, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 December 7#Category:Category-Class articles — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:13, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MSGJ: That has been closed. When you are ready for the bot to start working, open a text editor of your choice and replace NO BOTS with REDIRECT. There are over 14,000 categories. The bot took ~3 days to handle the mass moves of Category:LGBT to Category:LGBTQ, and that "only" affected ~5,000 categories. This one might take less time: The bot had to manually edit all individual pages in the LGBT(Q) tree to update the categories; this will be done by the template. But this is not a "tell the bot to go and it will be done in an hour" situation. There are also some which do not have the suffix "articles" (nor "pages"), which I have listed below. Once the dust settles we can figure out what to do with these:
HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 17:29, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll add: I think there should be some transitory code which uses the "page" name (if that category exists) with the option to fall back on the "article" name (if the "page" category does not exist). This should minimize the amount of redlinked categories and thus the disruption to Special:WantedCategories. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 17:41, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Very sensible idea. I'll work on that now — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:44, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looking into things further, the bot attempts to manually move each individual page in the category. It is currently stuck on attempting to move Category:File-Class Album articles (159,391), and as such has not edited for 12 hours. This is not going to be sustainable; all other CFD and CFDS nominations cannot be processed in the meantime. I think we need to enlist a different bot to make this happen, coded to simply move the category, remove the CFD tag, and add {{Old CfD}} to the talk page. (Or maybe JJMC89 can tell the bot to simply move these categories without worrying about updating things in the category?) CC Tom.Reding, MSGJ, Ymblanter, and JJMC89. Best, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 23:14, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is it because Category:File-Class Album pages already exists? Or is it stuck for another reason? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 23:20, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The bot did the move of the category, which is why Category:File-Class Album pages already exists. It is stuck on trying to update each member of the category. There are 159,393, so that is 159,393 edits. I don't know how fast JJMC89's bot is programmed to go, but WP:BOTPERF's maximum of 20 edits/minute, running 24 hours a day, gives ~5.5 days to finish that move alone. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 23:28, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
These should have been listed at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Large which is a separate channel that allows the bot to simultaneously process giant categories and regular CFD business. But the bigger problem is that the templates/modules/whatever have not been updated so they are generating the old category and keeping it populated. We simply have to put a stop to these messes where categories can't be fixed without very complicated code that few people know how to change and even fewer will process in time. Timrollpickering (talk) 23:53, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The pages remaining in Category:File-Class Album articles (159,391) are most, if not all, being emitted by {{WikiProject banner shell}}/{{WikiProject Albums}}, so will be moved by the backend job queue once MSGJ updates Module:WikiProject banner (or a related module). Once the module is updated, I can run null edits over the old cat to hasten the update. There is also User:ProcBot/PurgeList.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  02:53, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well I specifically asked for these categories not to be moved until I was ready with the code change, but they were moved regardless. Anyway, I should be able to update the code later today. Just need to do some more testing — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:54, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Right in future please do not make any further nominations without having the code change ready to go. There have been too many assurances and large parts of the category bot system thrown into chaos as a result. Timrollpickering (talk) 13:08, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

These requests have been processed but "what links here" on the deleted category still shows multiple links from article and category space. This may be, in part, due to links in templates for which the revised version has yet to be populated; these are automatically processed by the job queue. The current backlog size can be seen there. Null edits can alo be used to resolve these backlinks. Please do not remove entries from the list until the only remaining backlinks are from project or user space pages.
