The next South Korean presidential election was originally scheduled for 2027. However, following the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol on 14 December 2024,[1] an early election in 2025 is likely. According to the South Korean constitution, if President Yoon Suk Yeol resigns or is removed from office by the Constitutional Court, a snap presidential election must be held within 60 days.[2]

The next presidential election will be the ninth presidential elections since democratization and the establishment of the Sixth Republic. Under the South Korean constitution, the president is restricted to a single five-year term in office, making President Yoon ineligible for a second term.[3]

Impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol

[edit]

Following the declaration of martial law by President Yoon Suk Yeol on 3 December 2024, the opposition Democratic Party, which held a majority in the National Assembly, announced it would introduce an impeachment motion against President Yoon.[4] On 7 December, the vote on the first impeachment motion failed to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority to meet the quorum, with the ruling People Power Party boycotting the vote.

Following the vote, PPP Leader Han Dong-hoon said President Yoon had agreed to step aside and that Prime Minister Han Duck-soo would manage state affairs until Yoon's "orderly resignation".[5]

On 10 December, the PPP said that it was discussing Yoon's early resignation as early as February 2025 over the ongoing turmoil after his martial law declaration, followed by a snap election in April or May.[6]

On 14 December 2024, President Yoon was impeached by the National Assembly in a second impeachment motion. The National Assembly voted with 204 of 300 lawmakers supporting impeachment.[1]

Electoral system

[edit]

The president of South Korea is elected via a single-round plurality voting system, for a term of five years. Incumbent and former presidents are ineligible to seek re-election.[7]
