Pengam railway station is situated in Pengam on the Rhymney Line of the Valley Lines network in South Wales. It is also the nearest station to the town of Blackwood and is the 2nd busiest station on the Rhymney Line, after Caerphilly.

Service

Before the June 2024 timetable change, the Monday to Saturday train service was four trains per hour south to Cardiff Central and onwards to Penarth. Northwards there were also four trains per hour - three terminating at Bargoed and one train per hour continuing to Rhymney. In the evenings the service drops to hourly each way and to two-hourly on Sunday's (when southbound trains run to Barry Island). Since 2019, the Sunday train service has been increased to one train per hour.

The Monday to Saturday train service is four trains per hour south to Cardiff Central, but only two trains per hour continues to Rhymney. The xx19, xx30 and xx49 service continues to Barry Island but the xx59 service continues to Bridgend. Northwards there are also four trains per hour - two terminating at Bargoed (which is the xx01 and the xx31 service from Barry Island) and two trains per hour continuing to Rhymney (which is the xx20 from Bridgend and the xx50 from Barry Island) In the evenings from 8pm every Monday to Saturday, the train service will run two trains per hour, one train will continue to Bridgend and the other train will continue to Barry island. On Sundays, the train service will run hourly between Rhymney and Barry Island.

These services have now been operating from Rhymney/Bargoed to Barry Island/Bridgend since June 2024. It has increased the number of trains from one to two trains per hour that continues up to Rhymney every Monday to Saturday. This station serves four trains per hour each way, Monday to Saturday,

  • 2 per hour from Bargoed to Barry Island
  • 1 per hour from Rhymney to Barry Island
  • 1 per hour from Rhymney to Bridgend
  • 2 per hour from Barry Island to Bargoed
  • 1 per hour from Barry Island to Rhymney
  • 1 per hour from Bridgend to Rhymney

Apart from Glifach Fargoed and Energlyn & Churchill park as The Gilfach Fargoed station only serves one train per hour and the Energlyn & Churchill park only serves two trains per hour.

The Class 231, Class 150 and Class 153 trains operates to Barry Island and the Class 150 and Class 153 trains operates to Bridgend.
