I dunno
[edit]Is this ref worth an article? Stretchrunner (talk) 20:40, 10 January 2020 (UTC) "A century of racing - 50 greatest flat jockeys". The Racing Post. 17 May 1999. Retrieved 19 September 2016.</ref>
- Not an article in itself, but it would be worth adding the ref to individual articles. It's also a good starting point for identifying jockeys who really should have articles- Bernard "Brownie" Carslake for instance. Tigerboy1966 20:50, 10 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. The reason I thought about an article was that it in essence appeared the same as this: Blood-Horse magazine List of the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century. Stretchrunner (talk) 19:58, 11 January 2020 (UTC) Stretchrunner (talk) 19:59, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
- I never much cared for that article anyway. Despite the WP article's title the original Bloodhorse list was entitled "Top 100 Racehorses of the 20th Century". Tigerboy1966 07:38, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
Shimanoumi
[edit]Hi, I think there is a mistake in Shimanoumi Koyo's page, section Background. As I'm not fluent in english I'll let you correct it if needed. Thanks Sumo ch (talk) 21:32, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
He was scouted by several professional sumo stables but was not recruited at chose to continue his education.

Racing coverage
[edit]Coronavirus killed my visit to the UK. Can you tell me which of the major UK Sports Channel(s) will broadcast the 2020 Epsom Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes? Thanks. Stretchrunner (talk) 13:50, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
- ITV Racing and Sky Sports Racing would be the main ones. I think that the Derby is touch-and-go but they will probably run it "behind closed doors". With normal luck we will be back to normal by the King George at the end of July. You are probably asking the wrong person as I don't have a TV. The radio channels are BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra. Tigerboy1966 15:56, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. I now only have Roku and another streaming subscription channel on my TV for horse racing, news, and my other passion, tennis (ATP & WTA). Horse racing includes TVG (who at least did give us a Frankel race) and recently I got "UK Racing." It seems to have a lot of Irish racing. Unfortunately they never mention, at least from what I've seen so far, anything about future "top races" so I assume that channel doesn't carry them and as such won't give their competitors free advertising. This Covid-19 is certainly taking a toll over here. Hope all works out as best possible for all everywhere. BTW, congrats on your new American Prime Minister who seems to be a bit of a clone of another New Yorker.Stretchrunner (talk) 19:42, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
- Most of the big races are posted on youtube within an hour. so as long as you can avoid taking a sneak look at the results it's almost like watching live. As for our American PM: "being born in a stable does not make a man a horse" as the Duke of Wellington allegedly said. Tigerboy1966 21:24, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Breeding section added to Epsom Derby 1981 article
[edit]Hi there. I have just added a section pertinent to the breeding careers of the participants in the 1981 Derby. As you are the article creator, I would be interested in any feedback you might like to offer. Given that the race has historically been central to the production of bloodstock, I felt that an overview into the impact on the breed could make for an interesting footnote. All best wishes, Kotkijet (talk) 15:25, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
- I think that it's a really valuable and interesting addition to the article. Thank you, it must have taken a ton of research. I wonder what the best "future stallions" classic race was. I would lean towards the 1984 Prix du Jockey Club, when the first three home were Darshaan, Sadler's Wells and Rainbow Quest. Tigerboy1966 16:35, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you. I think much of the time was spent considering which format to use and how much space to dedicate to each sire and the accomplishments of their offspring. For a horse kidnapped after one crop, you can only really name a handful of useful horses in any case. But with a horse such as Galileo, at some point it ceases to be either practical or necessary to list all of his classic horses. Particularly as they will be mentioned in his own article. Galopp Sieger definitely makes the research a bit easier for flat horses but I do wish the information on jumps horses was less skeletal. I think one would be hard pressed to top that 1-2-3. The 1984 classic crop was quite fantastic since you also had the likes of Lear Fan, El Gran Senor and Mendez on the scene. Oddly enough, it was watching the 1985 Derby which gave me the idea as I noticed it featured more than its fair share of good National Hunt sires which led me to wonder if another Derby has produced a larger amount. It is only after a fair amount of research that answers can be found.Kotkijet (talk) 18:35, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
- I see your point about the 1985 Derby. Supreme Leader and Phardante got bucketloads of top class jumpers. Tigerboy1966 19:42, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
- This is really interesting stuff. I never noticed that the Epsom Derby articles talk about subsequent form as well. I'm wondering if we should add it to the Kentucky Derby articles. It's never been known as a stallion making race but it is the top-rated 3yo classic in the US and it would be nice to show why. (And also show the sad dearth of wins after some of the recent renewals!) Jlvsclrk (talk) 19:01, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
- Great research there and fascinating stuff, I'm trying to come up with someone to beat Tigerboy's suggestion of the 84 Prix du Jockey-CLub but can't think of anything at the moment. As a further thought - would "sires of Classic winners" etc read better than "Stallions of...."? All the best to everyone. --Bcp67 (talk) 08:48, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- Yup, I've been trying to think of something like that on the North American side and would have to go back to the 1957 Derby. Ignore the winner and you've got Bold Ruler, Gallant Man and Round Table. The 1968 Woodward would also rank up there, with Buckpasser, Damascus and Dr. Fager. Most of our great-sires were just below top class on the racetrack (eg Mr. P) or got injured (Danzig, Storm Cat). Jlvsclrk (talk) 16:14, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- Turns out the 2007 Kentucky Derby produced a bunch of noteworthy sires. Nothing on the order of Sadler's Wells, but Curlin is an absolutely top-notch sire with a couple of Classic winners to his credit, plus both Hard Spun and Street Sense have done well. And I'd forgotten that Scat Daddy was in the field, which gives you a Triple Crown winner in the progeny column. Jlvsclrk (talk) 00:38, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
- That's a good contender! I think that Scat Daddy, Hard Spun and Curlin could have the G1 winners tabulated as with Street Sense. Tigerboy1966 10:06, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Vimy Ridge
[edit]1959 colt Vimy Ridge by Vimy out of Angelicus
Thought you might be able to help:
He raced in the U.S. so I am looking for the name of his breeder and confirmation of where he was foaled. He is shown as bred in GB at Pedigree Query but in Ireland at Equiline. I always go with the latter. However, I found a very detailed story on his background and Canadian owner in a Tuscon, Arizona paper that says he was foaled in GB but raised in Ireland and was purchased privately in 1959 by Frank E. Power as a weanling from trainer Paddy Prendergast. Stretchrunner (talk) 14:28, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
- I can't find anything useful. The GB/IRE confusion can happen when a horse is bred in Northern Ireland. It's part of the United Kingdom but not Great Britain and horses foaled there take the (IRE) suffix. Tigerboy1966 05:56, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for trying. Stretchrunner (talk) 18:02, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
Missing a historic horse
[edit]We have no article on Australian (horse). Seems a notable omission. Interested in creating it? Montanabw(talk) 23:12, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
- I'll have a go at it. Tigerboy1966 05:51, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Only just started this but already found an interesting connection. I bet a pound to a china pig that the horse's breeder "W E Duncombe" was the man who later became William Duncombe, 1st Earl of Feversham. He would have been plain old W E in 1859. Tigerboy1966 18:00, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- What fun! Love the way this stuff all links up. Montanabw(talk) 14:51, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
New one, if interested
[edit]No article on Montana (horse). Won the Suburban Handicap in 1892. Some info here: [2] Ping me if you bite, I can add a PD photo. Another article that could be expanded to add horse racing info is a guy who lived on your side of the pond: William Broderick Cloete...There's a PD painting of him with one of his racehorses. Anyway, only if it sounds like fun. Montanabw(talk) 22:46, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Montanabw: Sorry for the delay in responding: there's been a sumo tournament on for the last 2 weeks (my boy Terunofuji won!) so I have just been doing sumo updates. I can't find much on this horse, the best info was from your book which mentioned him killing the rats in his stable. It might be a project that User:Stretchrunner would be interested in. Tigerboy1966 14:39, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- I have Montana on my list but as part of a first priority bio for the HoF trainer Matthew Byrnes whose list includes the likes of Firenze (horse), Salvator (horse), Scottish Chieftain (horse), Pontiac (horse) -- 3 of 5 already done by Wikipedians is normally a great help for me but 1) Pontiac also won the Suburban plus the Manhattan so I normally would do him before Montana, and 2), my health problems means I'm trying to narrow things down to a Priority List. Unfortunately, my P L is so huge that I will have to make further, deeper cuts and that is tough. I've actually started setting up "skinny stubs" for horse & their J/T/O articles; e.g. Joseph H. Pierce Jr. so it might be that I won't make it as far as Montana. Thanks. Appreciated. Stretchrunner (talk) 16:08, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- Stuff on Matt Byrnes (Matthew Byrnes, however it comes up) would also be awesome, the HOF trainers need articles and they are definitely a priority. Hope you get to feeling better, Stretchrunner. Obviously, I won't cite my own work and that's why I'm careful about even editing articles where I did a major profile unless I have piles and piles of neutral third party sources that aren't all WP:PRIMARY. I can dive into established articles like Spokane (horse) (if I get around to it) because I can just tap earlier sources and not use my own, but where there are new articles, it's better if another wikipedian tackles them, though I am willing to swing by and clarify stuff once they are underway (as I did for Mother Berry) Montanabw(talk) 21:57, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- Oh, and Stretchrunner, if you do tackle Scottish Chieftain, that's another Marcus Daly horse I have tons of stuff on. Email me if you want stuff. Montanabw(talk) 21:58, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
Epsom Derby
[edit]I'm a bit of a history lover so when I came across this in one of my searches at the DRF archives, I thought you might want to add it to the Derby article.[3] Stretchrunner (talk) 15:36, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
P.S. Do you know how I find out if someone has an e-mail address at Wikipedia? Thanks.
- if you go to someone's user page and look at the bar on the left side you will see an option "e-mail this user". You can add an email-address to your account by clicking on the Preferences tab. Tigerboy1966 16:05, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
Swiss Skydiver
[edit]Thought you might like an interesting note to maybe add to her bio. (especially so for those of us with granddaughter(s).) Can't remember where, but awhile ago I read her owner named her for his granddaughter who e-mailed him a photo of her skydiving in Switzerland. If my lousy memory is right, she might have been in the air and sent a "selfie" on her cellphone. Stretchrunner (talk) 16:27, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
- That's a good little nugget. I'll try to track it down. Tigerboy1966 16:36, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
Jockey categories
[edit]I've found several prominent U.S. Steeplechase (inc. HoF) riders who never rode on the flat but have found flat racing jockeys that rode a few Steeplechase events. I think we should create American steeplechase (jump ?) jockey as a separate category. Do you think we should do this for Europe & Australia as well with a standardized title fo all? Stretchrunner (talk) 16:46, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
Quadruple Dead Heat

Direct, reliable sources needed for Days of the Year pages
[edit]You're probably not aware of this change, but Days of the Year pages now require direct reliable sources for additions. For details see the content guideline, the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide or the edit notice on any DOY page. Almost all new additions without a reliable source as a reference are now being reverted on-sight.
Please do not add new additions to these pages without direct sources as the burden to provide them is on the editor who adds or restores material to these pages.
Thank you. Toddst1 (talk) 16:34, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Norfolk (horse), (Lexington x Novice, 1861). Interesting background. If you can't find sources, email me, and I can scan some pages about him from The History of the Thoroughbred in California, which I just purchased. Montanabw(talk) 18:42, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

Judy the Beauty
[edit]I wasn't sure about this line in the article so if you don't mind taking a look:
"On November 2 Groupie Doll contested the seventh running of the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita Park, with Luis Saez taking over the ride for the injured Velazquez.[13] After tracking the leaders in the early stages she made steady progress in the straight and finished second, half a length behind Groupie Doll." [edit]I guess I'm glad it was created, but needs your magic pedigree stuff, an infobox, massive cleanup and a copyvio check: Janus (horse). I moved it to a decent title, tagged it for the project and took a very brief whack at a copyedit, but it's beyond what I've got the time, knowledge and energy to tackle. Emaraaty Ana
[edit]I've spotted a couple of new horse articles linked to pages I've created and done a quick proof-read on them today. There's something wrong in the four-year-old section for Emaraaty Ana though which I can't fix - "Shortly after his run at York Emaraaty Ana. Later in the year he underwent surgery to correct breathing problems". Not sure if that is all about the wind op or whether you were looking to put something else in that first sentence? All the best! --Bcp67 (talk) 06:44, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- thanks for spotting this. I've been trying to catch up on G1 winners so may have been skipping the proof-reading. The problem has been fixed, as indeed was Emaraaty Ana. Tigerboy1966 07:42, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- Haha yes, see what you mean! --Bcp67 (talk) 11:54, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- I tend to keep an eye out for new articles on G1 winners, I've created a lot of race articles over the years and I get a notification when a new article is linked to one - hence I got a notification that Saffron Beach was linked to the Dick Hern Fillies' Stakes. If I have time I usually have a look through to spot anything obvious. If you ever want me to go through a new article, leave me a message and I'll happily proof read it.--Bcp67 (talk) 11:56, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Spinaway (GB) - Spinaway (US)
[edit]The article for Busybody (horse) links her dam Spinaway to the American mare (1878) but should be the Brit one of 1872. Not sure how best (norms?) to designate the two so will leave it to you. Thanks. Stretchrunner II (talk) 17:56, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
- I would go for Spinaway (British horse) vs Spinaway (American horse). There would be no need to change the name of the current article until there is one on the English mare. I wonder where the word "Spinaway" comes from: Lord Falmouth could not have invented the name for his Oaks winner as it had been given to a horse foaled way back in 1851. Maybe a lost piece of Victorian slang? Tigerboy1966 08:30, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
