Keep During WWI, there was a very strong anti-German movement in New Zealand. Villages with German names, founded by German settlers, were renamed (e.g. Ranzau became Hope). The German Church in Christchurch was taken over by the Crown. Longstanding and previously highly regarded German New Zealanders were persecuted. All of that received lots of media coverage.
