Our CEO, Matt Jamieson, was a panelist at yesterday's Project Partnering panel at this year's First Nations Energy Summit in Vancouver, hosted by Clean Energy Association of BC (CEBC).
This morning’s Project Partnering panel featured an engaging discussion moderated by Tricia Thomas, SI-MBA, Economic Development Director at Tumuxw Communications. The panel included Jason Rioux, Chief Development Officer at NRStor, Matt Jamieson, President and CEO of Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation, and Stephen Rayner, Elected Councillor of Huu-ay-aht First Nation. Panelists shared valuable insights into building successful partnerships between Indigenous Nations and industry, emphasizing the importance of trust, mutual respect, and aligned goals in driving clean energy initiatives. Jason Rioux urged participants to prioritize collaboration from the outset, stating, “Let’s start together instead of trying to end together somehow, which was never a good feeling.” Matt Jamieson highlighted the critical role of maintaining trust with community stakeholders: “We work really hard to protect our social license with the community. We are only as good as our last bad decision.” He also acknowledged both the challenges and the evolving opportunities in the industry, noting, “We have had tremendous success in the market but have also had shady interactions with proponents. We are seeing a paradigm shift happening… an emergence of companies that really do get it. You are the most important stakeholder. If you don’t have the right partner, it’s a race to the bottom.” Stephen Rayner shared Huu-ay-aht First Nation's efforts in energy planning and partnership-building: “We’ve developed a community energy plan, assessing how large the Nation can expand solar, wind, tidal, and potentially geothermal projects,” while underscoring the importance of Nation-to-Nation partnerships. Through storytelling and real-world examples, including the collaboration between Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation and NRStor, the panel provided strategies for structuring equitable agreements, ensuring Indigenous equity ownership, and fostering meaningful participation in clean energy projects. The session reinforced the essential role of Indigenous leadership and collaboration in advancing BC’s energy transition while promoting economic reconciliation and shared prosperity. #FNES2024 #CleanEnergyBC #IndigenousLeadership #EconomicReconciliation #CleanEnergyInnovation

Thank you to Vancity Community Investment Bank for including SNGRDC and Matt Jamieson in this important conversation! Check it out 👇
We dive into how Indigenous communities across Canada are playing a pivotal role in the clean energy transition, contributing their expertise and values to renewable energy projects. 🏞️ Projects like those led by Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation (SNGRDC) are a testament to the power of Indigenous leadership in this space. With significant stakes in energy storage and renewable power, they’re not only investors—they’re active partners shaping project success from the ground up. 🤝 As SNGRDC CEO Matt Jamieson puts it: “We must be strategic and selective.” The community’s participation means ensuring projects respect local values, from environmental protection to economic development. 📈 With more communities like Eskasoni First Nation adopting majority ownership in renewable projects, Indigenous involvement in Canada's clean energy sector is growing fast—and trusted financial partners are key. #IndigenousCleanEnergy #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #CommunityLeadership #CleanEnergy Terri Lynn Morrison James Jenkins Trish Nixon Tuscarora Nation
