The gift of reading It’s that time of year so I wanted to share some of my favourite reads from 2024 to inspire those who are looking for that last minute gift for a loved one. Each year I plan to learn more, to read more and to share more 😊 1. The Inner Game of Tennis by W Timothy Galwey. I kicked off the year with this one and it's a gem. First published in 1972 and as relevant today, it made me think about the power of the mind and how it can lead to success or cause us to fail at the most critical points (in life, not just on the tennis court). 2. The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves us Forward by Dan Pink. Want to know the biggest regrets people have in their lives so you can make sure that you don’t? An eye-opener to help you make better decisions aligned with your values and live your life with more purpose. 3. The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. I’m a fan of Haidt’s earlier work and this is probably his best release. Studies, statistics and scary stories about what the internet and social media are doing to our brains and in particular those of children. Information is power and we can do something about it. 4. Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection by Charles Duhigg. I enjoyed this so much I even re-read his earlier book The Power of Habit. Presented with honesty and clarity, Duhigg uses his genius storytelling approach to give examples of the conversations we’re really having and how we can listen better and influence more. Supercommunicators is a super read. 5. The 7 Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra. A book about how to overcome difficulty and succeed at almost anything. It’s easier than you think and this toolkit provides great tips on how to be an awesome and kind human. Profound, as always, in Chopra’s true style. 6. The Culture Map by Erin Meyer. I couldn’t put it down. A surprisingly easy read using a number of dimensions to illustrate difficulties in communicating, leading and doing business across borders. A great read for anyone in a multinational who has ever walked out of a meeting wondering why their pitch didn’t land well in another country…. Or who accidentally offended someone without really trying… And how to get it right. 7. Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez. Yes, the content may make you a little angry but you can’t change what you don’t know. The many ways in which women have been underrepresented in society is compelling, and fully outlined here whether it’s medical trials, mobile phone size, keyboard design, vehicle safety and more. Listen, learn and do something. In the words of the famous Dr. Seuss ‘The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go’. In our professional lives, we've all encountered critique and criticism in some form or another. While critique is meant to provide constructive feedback for improvement, criticism can often feel negative and fault-finding. By practicing how to critique, we can build a culture of learning and collaboration that benefits everyone. It's important to distinguish between critique and destructive criticism to maintain morale and productivity in any setting (home or office). Remember, as a human being (leader) our goal should be to help each other grow and improve.
