Navigation Help - LC Catalog Header and Footer
Responsive Design in the LC Catalog
The Library of Congress has implemented responsive design in the LC Catalog user interface. Navigation is driven by vertical menus and submenus, and displays employ on-screen toggles and the folding of content into accordion "drawers" for smaller screens.
LC Catalog navigation is centered in the header, which contains five main components: LC Catalog branding, a Quick Search box filtered by a drop-down list of Search Options, and on the right, a drop-down Login menu for patrons with Reader Identification cards along with the primary navigational menu for the LC Catalog.
Catalog Header: Quick Search
The Quick Search box, located in the center of the header, supports Keyword (ALL) Quick Search, which finds all words in any order or exact phrases located anywhere in catalog records.
Catalog Header: Search Options
Below the Quick Search box, the Search Options drop-down menu offers easy navigation between the Browse, Advanced Search, and Keyword Search options in the LC Catalog. After one or more searches have been performed during a search session, Search History also appears in the Search Options menu.
.Catalog Header: Primary Navigational Menu
To the right of the Quick Search box, the primary navigational menu anchors key components of LC Catalog. The first menu option links to LC Catalog Home, followed by LC Catalog Search Options. The menu also contains Ask a Librarian, information and frequently asked questions about the LC Catalog, Help, links to specialized catalogs and tools that provide access to additional LC resources, and a link to the Library of Congress Home.
Catalog Header: Login
Registered readers of the Library of Congress - as well as Congressional and Library staff with Library patron accounts - may log into the LC Catalog via the Login link located at the top right of each page. This service enables authorized patrons to request materials from the stacks and to view their requests and charged items in their account information. See the Guide for Requesting Materials in the Library's Online Catalog for additional information. Once logged in, the Login label name changes to Account. Smaller screens simply display a lock icon. The Login/Account menu also connects to Account Info Help.
Catalog Footer Links
Links in the bottom footer of each page connect to the Library's Patron Services RSS Feed and Email Updates, to Ask a Librarian and LC Catalog Feedback, and where appropriate, to context-sensitive Search/Browse Help.
