Hi Alhadis, Since the original file has some issues, I would suggest to do the following optimizations:

  • Use a nicely round circle (see other examples in Category:Newman projection)
  • Make the angles on the right hand side exactly 60°
  • Insert a small gap between the most left H and the hashed bond

Done. Please let me know if this is adequate. Alhadis (talk) 15:02, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Asking help for SVG translation

[edit]

Greeting Alhadis! So recently I noticed that you've translate some images (such as file:Lang Status 20-CR.svg) into another language. I wanted to translate these files don't really understand how SVG translation works and the notice says that translating via Toolforge is not a good choice.

If you please, may you help to translate the following images into Indonesian? The labels should be "Punah" for "Extinct", "Terancam" for "Endangered", "Aman" for "Safe". Thank you. Nyilvoskt (talk) 06:09, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

All done! Thanks for letting me know. Alhadis (talk) 19:58, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the help :D! Yet I didn't expect addition of Malay, the better term for "Extinct" in Malay should be "Pupus". Sorry for inconvenience. Nyilvoskt (talk) 20:46, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings Alhadis,

Thank you for updating the file format, but could you please, please redo the map's font to make it clearer? This isn't a triviality - the typeface was the key to why the PNG version was so successful (about 20 Wikipedia/Wikimedia sites used it, some Youtube videos too), and I was quite proud of making it.

(.png version)

Before 2012, the maps on this topic were very unsatisfactory: colours were illogical, and they only showed the winter times or the summer times, etc. You'll be well aware that Aussie timezones are a little overcomplicated, and there wasn't a map that made them instantly clear to readers, which I think this map did, by being legible at small or large sizes, and by the colour choices. I can't remember which font I chose(!), but the main goal was making it easily readable as black text or as gold text on maroon, and it had to be a decent size.

The new font in the SVG has some (easily solvable) problems with legibility - the "+10½" and "+11" are wider and are trailing off their respective land areas, and the NSW/VIC gold "+10" and "+11" are unclear in a small thumbnail due to the thinness of the lines in that font. If it's possible to use even an Arial-type font instead, if you have anything like that available for an SVG, that would make the whole map more readable in most potential situations, imo. Hope this makes sense. (I really don't know anymore :-)

(To be clear, the other (different) new map that's now on English Wikipedia wasn't made by me, I dislike it TBH, and the maker deleted the 2012 map here initially, so I'm sorry for being sensitive about this stuff.)

Best wishes, Responsible? (talk) 03:55, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, mate. The font you originally used was Futura, which is a commercial font not included in MediaWiki's SVG fonts (for obvious reasons related to licensing). I've changed the font to Arial, as you recommended. Alhadis (talk) 03:28, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. GPSLeo (talk) 11:40, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Chemistry image-deletion nominations

[edit]

Could you please add any DR of chemistry-related files to Commons:WikiProject Chemistry/Deletion requests? A bunch of chemists watchlist that page (including several admins), which helps get expert input and rapid handling. DMacks (talk) 04:32, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sure thing. Note that most of the images I've been nominating for deletion are PNG versions that've been superseded by identical or near-identical SVG versions; i.e., they shouldn't require a chemist's opinion to review. Alhadis (talk) 04:45, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing wrong with your current workflow. This is just an additional chemistry-centric notice-board. A few of us might see one or two nominated images from the same uploader and then check their other uploads to find a whole pile of images that could easily be upgraded. There might also be subtle MOS issues that aren't obvious. DMacks (talk) 05:02, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop deleting my images!

[edit]

Hello Alhadis, I noticed that you are currently nominating some of my images for deletion. You're reason is that they are duplicates of existing files. However, my files with the name "Structural formula of ..." or "Chemical structural formula of" are created to match the drawing guidlines for the German wikipedia, which is my home Wiki project. In contrast, file uploaded with "Structurename-2D-skeletal.svg" or "Structurename-2D-structure.svg" are created according to Manual of Style guidelines following the English Wikipedia project. These files can be used on all other Wiki projects, however in the German Wikipedia, we have slightly different ways to draw chemical structures (bond lengths, angles, etc.). Therefore I would like to kindly ask you to stop deleting my files for those reasons. — Chem Sim 2001 (talk) 04:59, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't aware that MOS:CHEM guidelines differed between locales. So, what's the difference between a structural formula drawn for German Wikipedia and one drawn anywhere else? I'm not seeing much difference; moreover, do you think the difference between File:Methyl formate.svg and File:Structural formula of methyl formate.svg is important enough to warrant having two copies of an image on Commons? Alhadis (talk) 05:20, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Leyo Could you please clarify if German Wikipedia uses a different MOS:CHEM than English Wikipedia, bitte? Dankeschön! Alhadis (talk) 10:22, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, look at de:WP:WEIS/TUT. The German Wikipedia project has different guidelines for drawing chemical structures than the MOS:CHEM guidelines. In addition, you can not nominated high-quality PNG files (like File:Ethyl cinnamate.png of chemical structures only because there is a SVG version. Some users prefer to use PNG files or they are not able to create vector images. But as long as the PNG file is of high-quality and has a high resolution, we keep it! — Chem Sim 2001 (talk) 18:07, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Concerning WP:WEIS/TUT; I'm confused. Does this mean there needs to exist two versions of every structural formula? What's the protocol on naming files to help users identify which version is German and which is English? Moreover, how does one stop users from embedding German formulae on English Wikipedia pages?

Some users prefer to use PNG files or they are not able to create vector images. … SVGs are displayed as PNGs when embedded on Wikimedia sites, so users are free to simply save the rasterised versions of a vector image if they so choose. As for creating vector graphics, nobody's expected to create vector versions of a file if they lack the means of doing so. That's where people like me come in.

But as long as the PNG file is of high-quality and has a high resolution, we keep it!
You're forgetting that an SVG file can be of identical quality and _infinite_ resolution, and often at a much smaller filesize. Not to mention an SVG is more amenable to editing with graphics software. Should an SVG supplant a high-resolution PNG, and the latter no longer in-use anywhere across Wikimedia, does it not behove one to nominate it for removal? Alhadis (talk) 18:22, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, it's possible for an SVG chemical diagram to accommodate both the German and English MOS guidelines. The trick is to (ab)use the <switch> functionality that normally handles localisation. Since its contents aren't limited to text, one could—in theory—embed different drawings for the German variant and the default/fallback (usually English).

I don't see this trick as much of a compromise, or even a practical solution (as it requires some SVG coding literacy). However, I felt compelled to mention it nonetheless. Alhadis (talk) 19:30, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Does this mean there needs to exist two versions of every structural formula? No, we don't need to have two structural formulas for the same compound twice, but if they already exists and they are of very high quality or even an SVG file, then they should be kept. Furthermore, there is no naming convention to distinguish between the different styles and this is not neccessary at all. Maybe e. g. in the Hungarian Wikiproject, they have own guidlines about drawing chemical structures and they should be free to upload them to Commons as well without getting deleted / superseded by another version.
... so users are free to simply save the rasterised versions of a vector image if they so choose. But this would mean that a user creates a PNG image of an SVG file, then uploads this to Commons for his own article/project and people like you would nominate the file for deletion because there is an identical SVG file?
SVG file can be of identical quality and _infinite_ resolution, and often at a much smaller filesize. I'm aware of the advantages of SVG file because I create and edit them myself, too, not only for Wikimedia. However, a high-quality PNG version has its right to exist! — Chem Sim 2001 (talk) 04:51, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But this would mean that a user creates a PNG image of an SVG file, then uploads this to Commons for his own article/project… I'm sorry, I fail to understand your original argument. WHy would a user need a PNG version of an image for an article/project in lieu of an SVG one? I assumed you were referring to "saving a PNG version to use in software that doesn't support SVG, or at least not completely".

However, a high-quality PNG version has its right to exist!… People have rights. Images don't. I've yet to hear a compelling reason why a 10 KB 1000×200 PNG shouldn't be replaced by a ~950 byte SVG with infinite resolution (even without obfuscating or compressing the SVG file's source). Alhadis (talk) 06:34, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop tagging high resolution/quality PNG structural formulas such as File:Ibuprofen-Enantiomere Strukturformeln.png, File:Acrylic acid synthesis from acethylene.png or File:Acetylsalicylic Acid Structure V.png with {{Convert to SVG|chemical}} per the discussion linked above. Thank you. --Leyo 00:10, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why? (Also, thanks for ignoring my request for help. Really appreciate you reading the thread but not deeming it worthy of your effort). Alhadis (talk) 00:13, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
See link in title or e.g. the reply in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Prop-2-enyl hexanoate.png. --Leyo 22:25, 2 March 2024 (UTC) PS. I had to spend hours of work to correct your edits. I haven't read the discussion above in detail yet. I am currently very busy in real life.[reply]
Maybe I'll just stop contributing altogether, because I can tell my efforts aren't wanted here. Thanks for killing my enthusiasm as a Wikimedia contributor. Alhadis (talk) 09:47, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are hundreds of poor quality structural formulas (e.g. in Category:Low quality chemical diagrams/expired), where re-drawing as SVG according to MOS is highly welcome. --Leyo 20:35, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dark mode

[edit]

In Wikipedia's new dark mode, this file of yours becomes invisible. Could you please update it by adding a white shadow or border so that it can be viewed in both light and dark modes? Thank you.
1.127.107.146 14:13, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure a drop shadow or border will be adequate. I recommend adding .skin-invert-image to the link's classes attribute. This only works because the image's contents conform to a very basic colour palette that's amenable to crude colour-filter hacks like the one applied by skin-invert-image.

NB: The correct approach would be to add color-scheme support to the SVG's CSS targeting @media (prefers-color-scheme: dark), but that'd require MediaWiki to display different thumbnails for dark-mode users (no doubt involving non-trivial changes to the SVG rasteriser machinery, assuming the changes weren't deemed too complex to be worth implementing). However, I suspect this approach is feasible based on the site's multilingual SVG support.

GFDL

[edit]

Hi! You uploaded File:Triazole.svg and licensed it GFDL. Commons no longer accept files licensed GFDL only since 2018 so perhaps you could also add a cc license? MGA73 (talk) 13:47, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you recommend {{CC-BY-SA-3.0}} or {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}}? The author of the original JPEG version that File:Triazole.svg was based upon tagged their upload with {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}}, so I'm leaning towards CC 3; however, you recommended CC 4 in your recent edit summary. I'm not an expert on licensing, which is why I make a point of uploading vectorisations under the same terms as those chosen by the author of the original work. — Alhadis (talk) 17:38, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
