Etymology
editBinchester almost certainly takes the first element of its name from the first element of the earlier Roman name Vinovia. This was Anglicised with the addition of the Old English word ceaster '(Roman) fortification' and perhaps through identification with the Old English word binn 'manger'.[2]
Governance
editBinchester was formerly a township in the parish of St Andrew-Auckland,[3] in 1866 Binchester became a separate civil parish, on 1 April 1937 the parish was abolished and merged with Bishop Auckland.[4] In 1931 the parish had a population of 60.[5]
