Draft:A26 motorway (Portugal)

  • Comment: It is likely notable, but you do not seem interested in providing where your information is coming from so. I'm not interested in further wasting time on this. McMatter (talk)/(contrib) 18:14, 15 December 2024 (UTC)

The A26 also known as Baixo Alentejo Motorway is a motorway construction project. When completed, it will be integrated into the IP8 itinerary along its entire length and into the IC33 in the section between Santiago do Cacém and Roncão. At that time, this motorway will connect the cities of Sines and Beja, passing through Santiago do Cacém and Ferreira do Alentejo. It was supposed to play a dual role: on the one hand, in the flow of products from the port and refinery of Sines, and on the other hand, in bringing the city of Beja and its airport closer to the A2 motorway and, therefore, to the capital Lisbon.

The only built sections of this motorway are located between Sines and Relvas Verdes and between the South Grândola exit of the A2 motorway and Malhada Velha, near Figueira dos Cavaleiros.

The A 26 will, in the indeterminate future, be expanded to Beja, through a section with tolls that will cross the landscapes of the Baixo Alentejo. The completion of the works was initially scheduled for September 2012, but the appearance of problems regarding the financing of the works at the end of 2011 delayed the deadlines, and the completion of the contract was postponed until at least 2016. This did not happen and currently the works are canceled. The opening of the A 26 in PNI2030 is planned.

  • On 2009-07-31, the contract for section A was launched, the connection of Roncão Interchange IC 33 / South Grândola Interchange IP1 .
  • On 2010-08-31, it was announced that the construction of IP8 , a road connection between Sines and Beja with a motorway and toll profile, had already begun. The work represented an investment of 257 million euros and its opening to traffic was scheduled for 2012.
  • On 2011-12-19, the Secretary of State for Public Works, Sérgio Silva Monteiro acknowledged that at the time there were suspended works in the works of the Baixo Alentejo Sub-concession, due to the "difficulty" of the concessionaire, the Estradas da Planície consortium, in obtaining financing from banks, a problem to which the State would be "completely unrelated".
  • On 2012-09-18, Estradas de Portugal announced that it had reached an agreement with the Estradas da Planície consortium regarding the Baixo Alentejo Sub-concession. This agreement resulted in the withdrawal of the sub-concession and suspension of the construction work on the sections between Relvas Verdes and South Grândola ( A2 ) and between Santa Margarida do Sado and Beja.
  • On 2012-12-16, Estradas de Portugal (EP) described the decision to build the A26 motorway as "a technical mistake", because "the planned traffic did not justify the creation of an expensive motorway to be literally out of traffic". The EP also said the 35 million euros spent to date were not "money invested", "but misapplied funds, which would never bring any significant benefit to the economy". Regarding the cancellation of the works, the EP said that it saved "about 60 million euros" to taxpayers.
  • On 2019-02-13, Infraestruturas de Portugal announced a deadline of March 14 for the start of the works at the South Grândola toll plaza of the A2, for the inauguration of the South Grândola ( A2 ) - Malhada Velha section, by the concessionaire Brisa. If the work did not go ahead by March 14, the Government would take possession of it.
  • On 2020-06-26, the South Grândola ( A2 ) - Malhada Velha section was opened to the public, after the completion of the works at the toll plaza.
  • On 2024-07-07, the works between Relvas Verdes and Roncão were resumed.
