I removed the speedy deletion request from this page. The user that added it is known to abuse this process.

Perhaps before anyone else feels like doing it again, it can be discussed civilly here. gh5046 (talk) 23:48, 31 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Synchronization between servers

edit

"So that ownCloud justifies the term cloud, synchronization between different ownCloud servers is being worked on."

Is there a source for this? Is this planned for owncloud 5 ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.152.75.65 (talk) 20:05, 25 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Motivation section

edit

The Motivation section is irrelevant , redundant and anachronic . Irrelevant, because the software have nothing to do with the NSA, this software by itself does not prevents external surveillance . Redundant, because the NSA surveillance is just an special case of privacy and control concerns, the original motivation of this software already predates that. Anachornic since the original motivation predates the NSA scandal. Is there any good argument to not delete that section? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alsamuef (talkcontribs) 14:38, 5 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Being bold: tidied up

edit

Hi, I've re-written things a bit in order for them to be better understood by ordinary people, introduced some structure, and added a few secondary sources. I've now removed the quality tags because of that. I think the "features" section might also need deleting if we are to avoid further accusations of the article sounding like an advertisement, but I'll leave that to others to decide. --gilgongo (talk) 18:45, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

What has this got to do with KDE?

edit

It seems the only connection ownCloud has with KDE is that it was written by somebody who was a KDE developer. I'm not sure it's relevant to call a cross-platform web application "related" to KDE is it? --gilgongo (talk) 18:50, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

You're right, but Frank Karlitschek presented it at a KDE Developer Event, it is still available in their Stream on Youtube and the Blogpost from the KDE event is the first mentioning of the term "ownCloud" in any media. But I think by linking to these three sources that connection should be clear enough, no need for further mentioning, I was told by a reviewer in the German Language Wikipedia.  :-)

"ownCloud" or "OwnCloud"?

edit

Is the name really "ownCloud"? Isn't it "OwnCloud"? --Mortense (talk) 20:15, 6 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

everywhere case is used on the web site, it is rendered "ownCloud"
WP:MOSTM states it should be OwnCloud on Wikipedia. 194.75.171.106 (talk) 10:14, 19 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi. I see no such thing on WP:MOSTM. MOSTM says "trademarks rendered without any capitals are capitalized" like "Adidas" instead of "adidas". But "iPod" and "eBay" are deemed okay in it. If I am missing something, please feel free to quote.

Over the years, I've become jaded by the way companies tend to use capitalization in their brand and product names. I believe that pronouns used to be quite simple, and usually started with a capital letter. Organizations and companies tend to constantly change names and capitalizations over time. At this point, in terms of having excellent encyclopedic content, I believe pronouns should be capitalized to keep the content consistent, especially for future improvements in accessibility and text-to-speech. A note regarding the stylized "ownCloud" can be used. For example, the first sentence can start as follows: OwnCloud (stylized as ownCloud) is a suite of client–server software... A separate article about Nextcloud or a sub-heading in the ownCloud page?

edit

You probably already know about it. If not, google it. ownCloud's founder left and made a new (forked) project - Nextcloud. Should there be another, new article for nextcloud or maybe a subheading in this one? Apparently there's already a page on the German Wikipedia https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nextcloud — Preceding unsigned comment added by 185.54.163.178 (talk) 06:50, 15 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Nextcloud should remain as a separate article as it's now possibly more popular than OwnCloud. However, Nextcloud should definitely be referenced in this article. Information from the Nextcloud history section can be used. Somerandomuser (talk) 00:11, 8 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Is own cloud free?

edit

The page currently said that owncloud is free, when I checked on google app store, it was 99 cent, this is not free software.

--Guillcote (talk) 06:10, 16 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

The server software and clients for other operating systems are available for free. The article should mention that apps for Android and IOS are not free.  —jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 07:16, 16 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Reads like an ad

edit

To me this article reads like an advertisement. Should we add this badge to it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Human urostor (talkcontribs) 07:39, 20 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

I agree. I will add the template to the article. Somerandomuser (talk) 00:02, 8 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I had a look at this article alongside the German one: checked and replaced links, removed promo material and marketing lingo, shortened text and the table of versions. If someone else could have a look if the changes are enough to remove the ads template, I'd appreciate that. Sanddorn nordwest (talk) 10:24, 26 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
I also had some looks on it and have applied some changes. What else can be done to remove the badge? How can I help? Disclaimer: ownCloud pays me to keep their version info up-to-date in the internets, e.g. in Wikidata, wikipedia EN and DE. Mfeilner (talk) 17:26, 10 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Those edits from Dec 2022 made it worse. The introduction went from file hosting and self hosting to a bunch of enterprise level name dropping. See Special:Diff/1127186501 and try to make it better. Miqrogroove (talk) 16:45, 5 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi and thanks for the answer. In the discussion on the German Wikipedia, I got the suggestion to focus more on the free software project, not on the product. In a three-step iteration, I updated the german site and got positive feedback from a reviewer.
So I took the changes and put them in this page here, too - atm it only affects the first paragraphs. Names of companies should only be mentioned in the history now, Frank is back in, and I am happy for any feedback that tells me how I can help.
Thanks! Mfeilner (talk) 16:52, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Obsolescence

edit

ownCloud is no longer compatible with any current version of PHP. It runs on PHP 7.4 only, which means as of November 2021 the ownCloud 10 / Server / Community project can't run on servers or hosting companies where that version of PHP is disallowed by security policy. While this doesn't make ownCloud totally obsolete, it is a very significant development in the status of the project and company overall. I suggest adding a balanced description of the inadequate product maintenance. See ownCloud System Requirements for reference. Miqrogroove (talk) 14:48, 22 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Added more info to the introduction today. Please fix if this isn't completely accurate, but it looks like "ownCloud Server" is not compatible with PHP 8, whereas "ownCloud Infinite Scale" avoids PHP and Apache altogether, yet there is no indication that it could ever run on a shared host that serves everything through Apache. Miqrogroove (talk) 17:31, 5 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

My description was removed by anonymous editor who replaced it with more sales pitch and name dropping. I have restored the September 5 version of that paragraph. Miqrogroove (talk) 17:18, 27 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

The description you provided was factually wrong, as is your comment above. ownCloud is being used by millions of users (CERN, Bayernbox, Bavarian School cloud alone has a million, soon 5 Million users) and the argument that Infinite Scale will never run on Apache may be correct, but I doubt this is relevant. Speaking of "hosted" servers: Here's an example for a setup at a free hoster that shows how it is setup in less than a minute: https://owncloud.dev/ocis/deployment/ubernauten/, I am working on more examples. Mfeilner (talk) 11:33, 24 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

I disagree and I think those edits to remove my "correct" content are extremely biased. Miqrogroove (talk) 13:41, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

We had a lenghty and successful discussion of this topic in the German Wikipedia. I'm very happy that I could learn a lot about wording and more. But it is also clear that content like the one discussed here is not relevant for the website about the ownCloud project. I removed lots of content about the company and its product(s) from the German Wikipedia site and will do so here soon.
Thanks for your help, I am sorry that we disagree, but I strongly do so. I am totally convinced that the dropping of PHP, security and scalability issues and the fact that ownCloud chose to maintain PHP themselves for the legacy PHP product is not really relevant for the total view. ownCloud 10 is "the old product", Go and the new architecture is the current state. Rewriting History.

edit

I'm not a regular Wikipedia editor, so I apologize for any errors here. I, Frank Karlitschek, am the sole founder of ownCloud in January 2010. This can be verified through a very simple internet search. For example here: Frank Karlitschek In December 2011, ownCloud Inc was founded in the USA by three people, of which I was one. But ownCloud only has one founder. Unfortunately, an ownCloud GmbH employee has been trying to rewrite the story here on Wikipedia for some time. The note that I am the sole founder has already been successfully removed. Now it is also said that several KDE developers are the founders. That's wrong. What can be done to prevent these false statements? And isn't it inadmissible for an ownCloud GmbH employee 'Markus Feilner' to rewrite your own article according to your own wishes? https://central.owncloud.org/t/wikipedia-updates-in-entries-for-owncloud-de-en/46385 FrankKarlitschek (talk) 08:08, 19 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hey Frank, thanks again for your contribution and founding this project. We had a discussion on the discussion page of the german wikipedia page for ownCloud, which I guess has a good suggestion for a fix (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diskussion:OwnCloud). I am very happy that we have more contributions to this page now, thank you very much! As mentioned below, I will do my very best to update and correct this page in the proper way. Sorry for my mistakes, which are due to lack of knowledge of Wikipedia processes, but I am willing to learn.

Thanks for the input!

Removing "advertising" content

edit

Hi all,

with reference to a similar discussion at German Wikipedia (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diskussion:OwnCloud) I will try to remove all advertising content from this page, focusing on the open-source project and not on the company and its products.

As mentioned in my profile, ownCloud pays me for updating the Wikipedia pages, but actually only for updating version numbers. The rest of my changes have been unpaid, private work, because the page had been outdated or had wrong content. But I am aware that that doesnt' matter, since I am working for ownCloud, I do not count as neutral.

I would love to get in contact with a reviewer from Wikipedia (EN), because I am not 100% acquainted with WP rules and the differences between EN and DE. Any help appreciated. I hope by focusing on the project rather than the software or companies the page will become more helpful. And please tell me where I am wrong, both factually as in style, rules or anything else - I will try to give my very best.
