Question from Kicab (15:52, 29 November 2024)

I edited the Three Prisoners Problem. The change was added and then removed by Burghardt who said it should be discussed on talk page. How do I do that?

Hi Kicab, sorry for the slow response, I've let a backlog of questions on my talk page build up. By the looks of it, you managed to find the talk page, if you need any more help please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you, --Ferien (talk) 22:03, 31 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Ferien. No worries about "slow response." I did get to Talk page and asked for some advice. I got some advice but not enough for what to do next. I also asked for advice from the Mathematics/Probability group but since it has low priority there was no response and it was archived. The answer posted on Wikipedia for the Three Prisonsers Problem is wrong and can be proven in at least three ways. But to change it, requires several steps which I am working on. Thanks. Kicab (talk) 13:12, 1 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi Kicab, when you say requires several steps which I am working on, I think this is potentially where people have a concern. There is a policy on Wikipedia that disallows original research. All material in Wikipedia needs to have been cited in reliable, secondary sources, and therefore, if you are having to prove a problem is wrong yourself on an article, then you are unable to change it, be it through on-wiki or off-wiki methods such as source creation. However, if the answer posted on Wikipedia has already been proven wrong in reliable, secondary sources, please cite these to prove the answer is incorrect and the content can be adjusted. Thank you, --Ferien (talk) 22:29, 2 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi Ferien, my article in Chance is a "reliable, secondary source" (peer-reviewed) which proves in several ways that the answer is incorrect. I was just using one or two of those ways to show in the Wikipedia article why the answer is incorrect.
You say "sources" (plural). Does there have to be more than one source?
The reason I said several steps was to accomplish the following: 1) state the problem asks one question but answers a different question, 2) show why the latter answer is incorrect in a couple of ways, 3) state that for probabilities other than 0 or 1, the events must not have occurred, and 4) show how to reword the problem so the article answer is correct (but then there is no paradox).
Thanks. Kicab (talk) 17:47, 3 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Question from Brierforest1 on Temple tax (18:12, 29 November 2024)

edit

I do not believe this entry is correct. The ancient Levites were exempt from The Temple Tax in ancient Israel as they were not counted in the census and were priests. The Levite tribe was the priestly tribe and separated into Cohens who were a higher priestly family that are descendents of Aaron. The Levites that served The Temple. --Brierforest1 (talk) 18:12, 29 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Brierforest1, and welcome to Wikipedia! Sorry for the slow response. Please, be bold, feel free to fix a page if you believe it is incorrect. Content in Wikipedia should have reliable sources to back them up and if it doesn't, it can be removed. Let me know if you need any more help. Hello Used Q&A4.0 ~ circa 1990. Age 82, poor eyesight and new technology has me wonder if BroadCom or competitor may have reproduced Q&A4.0 for use on Windows 11 ? Still the 3.5" floppies except that it is not compatible with 64 bit and Symantec introduced protective security for business clientele. Thank You. Question from Awkwardmarie (22:06, 5 December 2024)

edit

Hello! How do I add userboxes on my user page? --Awkwardmarie (talk) 22:06, 5 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Awkwardmarie, sorry about the slow response, I've let a backlog of questions build up on this talk page lately and I have not been staying on top of them as well as I should be. You can find a list of userboxes at Wikipedia:Userboxes/Galleries/alphabetical. So, for instance, you could go to Wikipedia:Userboxes/Bus rapid transit, to see an example. There is wikitext presented in the first column, with the userbox template, along with the userbox, or transclusion of that userbox, in the second column. The wikitext is the code you add to your userpage to make it appear, and the transclusion is what appears. But, if you already know the userbox you are going to add: check the page title, copy it without "Template:". Go to your userpage, create page, add two curly brackets at the beginning, the pagename you've copied, and two curly brackets at the end. It should look a bit like this: {{Userbox BusEnthusiast UK}}. If you are copying from a userbox from a user, a page beginning in User:, then you can copy the full title, like so: {{User:Wishva de Silva/UBX/London Buses}}. If you are adding multiple userboxes, you can use {{Userbox top}} and {{Userbox bottom}} at the start and end of your userboxes, to put them all into a box on the side, like I have. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions! --Ferien (talk) 22:38, 2 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Question from BlizzardHero (10:38, 14 December 2024)

edit

Hello, quick question about linking to external resources. How granular should external links be? To illustrate, two examples: an oral history collection about a town linked to the page for said town (for which none of the interviewees should receive their own page), and a single audio recording in an archival database.

In the first case, oral history collections might be conducted about a subject, but might be too broadly related in their subject focus. In the second case, the resource might be too granular and thus not worth linking to. I couldn't find clarifying examples in the external links guide page, so I'm sorry for asking. Thanks! --BlizzardHero (talk) 10:38, 14 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from MayerBrand (15:40, 16 December 2024)

Some things look a little redundant or maybe convoluted with repetitive synonym use.

I'll try to keep my eye on those and rewrite with proper English so that the most detail is absorbed through the least amount of wording.

I signed up to keep my eye on Wikipedia and donated what I could for now.

Question from 22EBronze (16:54, 26 December 2024)

edit

Hi,

Can you help me figure out how to put in a reference to a website off wikipedia that is already referenced in the article? I want to move the first reference to an earlier part of the article, and not break anything.

The article is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanda_America_Dickson

The reference is currently listed as 3 (New Georgia Encyclopedia). I want to introduce this reference after my edit at 16:42, 26 December 2024. So after the sentence: "He was the child of an enslaved black woman, Kit, and was ultimately bought by wealthy white John Toomer, who had settled in Houston County, Georgia in the 1850s."

Thank you. I read the article about references, but I don't know about the superscripts a, b, etc. --22EBronze (talk) 16:54, 26 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Stud umarbek (03:46, 30 December 2024)

edit

Hello Ferien, I'm Umarbek; nice to meet you! :D I'm having trouble with this, could you please give me some tips for expanding short articles? What kind of information would be more beneficial to add to the wikipedia articles and in what way? --Stud umarbek (talk) 03:46, 30 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Umarbek, welcome to Wikipedia! :) You might want to avoid expanding articles for the time being, as that can be quite a difficult task. But my personal feedback for doing it, you can search online for info about the article represented in reliable sources. The reason these stubs are in a seemingly-perennial state of stubiness is because, well, from my perspective at least there probably isn't that much to say about them. This is particularly the case with geographical articles on small settlements, where nothing really happens. They do deserve an article, yes - pretty much all geographical populated places are notable per Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features) - but is there going to be a lot to say in it? Probably not. That being said, there are plenty of stubs out there where the sources just need to be found that show why a person or event or building (or anything!) is truly so significant that we're just not discovering or finding out here yet. Best of luck if you continue with this task, it's challenging - I still don't find myself having the time or, often, effort for content creation - but it is highly rewarding when you see the end result! Thanks, --Ferien (talk) 22:48, 2 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Drafting my first article

edit

Hello Ferien,

I want to create a new Wikipedia page. But, as I am connected with the subject matter I am not sure if the article will be accepted. Or, what the best way to go about creating the article. I do have many outside citations to offer. Could you advise me? For your information, the article is about an important program called the Adult Education Center that transformed civil rights in the workplace. Here is a summary:

"The Adult Education Center (AEC) in New Orleans played a critical role in desegregating the professional workforce of the Deep South. From 1965 to 1972, the AEC trained 431 African American women as secretaries, many of whom went on to integrate major corporations and government offices. Despite systemic opposition and multiple shutdowns, the AEC became one of the most successful War on Poverty programs, recognized in national media and the Emmy-winning 1968 documentary The School That Would Not Die. Its graduates helped reshape workplace diversity in the South, making the AEC’s legacy a vital chapter in civil rights and education history. Its legacy continues today in the form of the non-profit scholarship program known as the 431 Exchange."

Thank you for whatever guidance you can give me.

Sincerely, Jeff Geoffray Jeff Geoffray (talk) 00:51, 4 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
